The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 25,000 students. Purpose of Position
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Building Services and the direction of the Lead Groundsworker, the Groundsworker II is responsible for performing grounds maintenance and constructing athletic fields, maintaining track and stadium grounds, performing grounds maintenance, operating motor vehicles and equipment, conducting snow removal, and supporting events and special projects. This position will act as a site lead for athletic fields, track, and stadium grounds, assisting the training and direct work of other MMSD Groundsworkers assigned to the area. The duties listed below are commonly performed. Other duties may be required to complete as assigned.
This position will have a high degree of integrity, sustain a culture of continuous improvement, and be committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive work environment while having a growth mindset to a multi-faceted operation while having a focus on creating a positive work culture.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This role will not provide direct supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Grounds & Exterior Maintenance 75%
Maintain, clean, construct and repair athletic fields, track and stadium grounds, bleachers, stands, and related equipment
Perform landscaping and grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, pruning, and general upkeep of fields, green spaces and school grounds
Lay out and mark athletic fields and track and field areas according to District standards
Install, maintain and repair fencing, blacktop and concrete surfaces
Operate snow removal equipment to maintain safe access during winter conditions
Equipment & Vehicle Operations 15%
Inspect, repair and maintain grounds equipment
Perform routine maintenance on District vehicles
Operate pallet trucks, forklifts, mowers and other powered equipment in accordance with safety standards
Compliance & Operational Support 5%
Coordinate with Athletic Directors, coaches, and renters to communicate service expectations and ensure task completion
Maintain stock levels and obtain necessary materials in accordance with procedures
Adhere to District dress code and identification requirements
Other Duties as Assigned 5%
Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees.
Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values.
Complete any and all district required training.
Build collaborative relationships with business partners.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:
Demonstrated ability to establish relationships at all levels of the organization
Follow principles and practices that promote and advance anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion
Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position
Ability to train, support, and supervise the work of other grounds staff
Ability to install, maintain, lay out and repair athletic fields, playgrounds and grounds infrastructure
Ability to operate grounds equipment, including front-end loader, skid steer, gang mowers, tractors, field groomers, sweepers, and snow removal equipment
Ability to read, follow directions and maintain records
Ability to interact and communicate effectively with all district personnel, including staff, students, and the community
Ability to complete work orders and tasks in a timely manner
Ability to work with a team or work independently with limited supervision
Ability to inventory stock, purchase materials, and maintain accurate records
Knowledge of industrial and safety practices.
Knowledge of concrete and blacktop paving, landscaping, turf management, irrigation, and conditioning of soils
Required Qualifications
One year of experience as a Groundsworker or equivalent commercial experience
Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward one’s own cultural competence (i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one’s skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas).
License or Certification Requirements
Valid Wisconsin driver's license and ability to be insured by the District.
Commercial Driver's License preferred.

Physical Requirements
Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity is necessary for completing general tasks while operating office equipment. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time.
Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including in inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning, and areas where temperatures may be uncomfortable or fluctuate rapidly.
Working Conditions
Work may require travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.
Position may require working evenings, nights, and some weekends.
School-based positions are required to be in-person unless otherwise directed by the building principal.
