Position Summary
The Estimator prepares accurate, competitive cost estimates for commercial signage projects by reviewing drawings, specifications, bid documents, and customer requirements. This role evaluates material, labor, equipment, subcontractor, freight, and installation costs and partners with Engineering, Purchasing, Production, and Project Management to ensure each estimate is complete, feasible, and aligned with company profitability goals. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review architectural plans, customer specifications, bid packages, sign schedules, site plans, elevations, and related documents to define project scope and requirements.
- Prepare detailed estimates for interior and exterior signage, monument signs, channel letters, cabinet signs, directional and wayfinding systems, ADA signage, and digital displays, as applicable.
- Calculate costs for materials, fabrication labor, finishing, electrical components, freight, equipment, subcontracted services, and installation.
- Determine labor hours, production requirements, and installation resources based on project complexity and schedule.
- Obtain and evaluate pricing from vendors, subcontractors, and installers to support competitive and reliable bids.
- Coordinate with Engineering, Production, Purchasing, and Project Management to confirm constructability, manufacturing feasibility, lead times, and capacity.
- Identify estimating risks, cost-saving opportunities, and pricing considerations that support margin goals.
- Maintain current pricing data for materials, labor, freight, equipment, and vendor services.
- Participate in bid reviews and project handoff meetings to communicate assumptions, exclusions, risks, and cost drivers.
- Prepare pricing for change orders, revisions, alternates, and value-engineering options.
- Maintain organized estimate files, supporting documentation, and bid history.
- Monitor industry trends, supplier changes, materials, and technologies that may affect estimating accuracy and efficiency.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred.
- Three to five years of estimating experience, preferably in commercial sign manufacturing, architectural signage, fabrication, construction, or a related industry.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret architectural drawings, blueprints, specifications, shop drawings, and sign schedules.
- Working knowledge of commercial sign fabrication and installation methods preferred.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and organization.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple bids, revisions, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general business software; experience with estimating or ERP systems is a plus.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain assumptions and cost drivers.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments.
