Director, Engineering at Articore Group
Articore runs Redbubble, TeePublic, Dashery, and Frankly Wearing. As Director of Engineering, you'll lead a significant part of our Engineering organization, with engineering managers and individual contributors reporting to you across multiple teams. You'll set delivery standards for the group, balancing near-term product and business needs against long-term technical investment and debt reduction. As part of this remit, you'll also directly lead the Dashery engineering team, a small, high-priority group building a new direct-to-consumer product, acting as its hands-on Engineering Manager while operating at the broader organizational level as a manager of managers.
This is an AI-first engineering organization, and you'll lead that shift in practice: setting the standard for agentic tooling, AI-assisted review, and automation, and holding teams to a higher output bar because of it. Our Engineering function spans Australia, the US and India. You'll work closely with peer Engineering and Product Directors across all our geographies and depend on strong cross-timezone communication to keep decisions and delivery moving.
You're accountable for building a high-performing, engaged organization, recruiting and growing talent, developing the next generation of Engineering leaders, and ensuring the technology being built can scale with the business. You're a strong communicator who translates business priorities into technical roadmaps, and technical tradeoffs into terms non-technical stakeholders can act on.
Core Responsibilities
You'll partner with peer engineering leaders and product, design, and executive stakeholders, sharing responsibility for delivery, people, and technology while owning delivery for the Dashery team directly. Your impact will span three areas: Delivery, People, and Technology.
Delivery
- Lead a multi-team engineering organization, managing engineering managers and individual contributors to deliver against shared technical and company objectives.
- Own delivery for the Dashery team directly, acting as its engineering manager: setting sprint discipline, unblocking work, and driving a groomed, predictable backlog as it builds a new product from the ground up.
- Partner with peer senior Engineering leaders, the Senior Director of Engineering (Australia) and the Director of Data Engineering (US), to align roadmaps, calibrate standards, and coordinate cross-functional dependencies.
- Balance short-term delivery against long-term investment, making explicit tradeoffs between immediate product and business needs and technical debt reduction.
- Partner with Product, Design and Executive stakeholders to align roadmaps and represent Engineering in planning and budgeting discussions.
People
- Build and scale the organization through recruiting, headcount planning and structuring teams for growth, owning retention and engagement as core goals.
- Coach and develop engineering managers and leads, helping them grow their own balance of technical and people leadership.
- Manage performance and career growth for direct reports, including regular 1:1s, feedback, and development conversations.
Technology
- Lead AI-first engineering practice, setting and enforcing standards for agentic coding tools, AI-assisted review, and automation, with adoption measured in delivery, not enthusiasm.
- Develop and execute technical strategy across your organization, in alignment with Articore's overall tech strategy, continually refining development and infrastructure standards.
- Steward architecture and technical quality across your domain, ensuring solutions align with company-wide engineering standards and principles.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience managing engineering teams, including direct experience managing other managers.
- Demonstrable marketplace experience, you've built or scaled a two-sided marketplace and understand seller supply, catalog scale, search and discovery, and buyer conversion as engineering problems.
- Strong technical background sufficient to perform code reviews, contribute to architecture discussions, and stay hands-on with a team when needed.
- History of building and scaling engineering organizations: recruiting, performance management, and developing managers and ICs alike.
- Experience operating effectively across a globally distributed engineering function spanning Australia, the US, and India, with the async judgment, written clarity, and handoff discipline needed to keep work moving when working days barely overlap.
- Current, demonstrable AI-first practice: you're already driving agentic AI tooling in production engineering work — adoption, review standards, quality guardrails — and can point to what changed as a result. Interest in AI is not sufficient.
Key Attributes for Success
- Comfortable operating at two altitudes at once — setting organizational strategy while staying close enough to one team to lead it directly.
- Leads by example: technically credible enough to earn trust from engineers, even where you aren't writing code daily.
- Inclusive collaborator who builds psychological safety and strong engagement across disciplines and seniority levels.
- Comfortable with ambiguity, particularly around a new product where the answers aren't written down yet.
Benefits
- Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
- Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
- Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
- Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
- Family Leave (Maternity, Paternity)
- Short Term & Long Term Disability
- Training & Development
- Work From Home
- Wellness allowance
