About the Team
Dean Dorton’s Forensic and Valuation Services (FVS) team helps clients navigate complex financial situations with confidence and clarity. Through forensic accounting, business valuation, and litigation support, our professionals provide trusted insight during investigations, disputes, and strategic decision-making events. Combining deep technical expertise with sound judgment, the team delivers credible analyses, defensible results, and objective guidance when the stakes are high.
About the Role
The Business Valuation Senior Consultant is an experienced individual contributor responsible for leading defined workstreams within valuation engagements, completing complex analyses, and supporting Managers and Directors with engagement execution and client delivery. This role combines advanced valuation expertise with day-to-day project coordination, client communication, and coaching of Associates.
The Senior Consultant develops and reviews valuation models, prepares reports and presentations, coordinates assigned deliverables, and identifies issues that require escalation. This individual may serve as the day-to-day contact for assigned portions of an engagement but does not hold final responsibility for engagement scope, pricing, profitability, or formal team member performance management.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The essential duties & responsibilities of the Business Valuation Senior Consultant role are outlined below in correlation with Dean Dorton’s performance management impact areas.
Technical
Definition: Your specialized knowledge and expertise associated with the work you perform for/with clients (note: clients may be internal to Dean Dorton).
- Lead defined workstreams and significant portions of business valuation engagements under the direction of Managers and Directors.
- Perform complex valuation analyses for operating businesses, ownership interests, and intangible assets for transaction, tax, financial reporting, strategic planning, and litigation purposes.
- Develop and refine valuation models using income, market, and asset-based approaches, documenting key assumptions, sources, and conclusions.
- Review workpapers, valuation models, and supporting analyses prepared by Associates for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with engagement objectives.
- Perform financial modeling, industry research, economic analysis, and market research to support valuation conclusions.
- Research and interpret valuation standards and industry data, applying professional judgment to client facts and circumstances.
- Prepare clear, concise, and well-supported valuation reports, schedules, exhibits, and presentations for review by engagement leadership.
- Coordinate document requests and analyze financial statements, tax returns, forecasts, contracts, and operational data relevant to the valuation.
- Identify potential technical, data, or engagement risks and communicate them promptly to Managers or Directors.
- Maintain technical proficiency with applicable standards, including AICPA, ASA, and NACVA guidance, and with software tools used in valuation engagements.
- Maintain organized, well-supported workpapers and follow firm quality-control standards throughout the engagement.

- Monitor time and progress against the engagement plan and communicate potential scope, budget, or scheduling concerns to Managers and Directors.
- Communicate complex valuation findings clearly and translate technical results into practical insights for clients and internal stakeholders.

- Review Associate work and provide timely coaching, technical guidance, and constructive feedback.
- Contribute to strong client relationships through responsiveness, reliability, preparation, and thoughtful communication.
- Collaborate with Managers, Directors, and professionals across service lines to support proposals, engagement planning, and coordinated client solutions.
- Manage multiple priorities and adapt to evolving client, engagement, and team needs.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, objectivity, and confidentiality in all interactions.
Non-Charge
Definition: The contribution you make to Dean Dorton outside of client work.
- Support business development activities, including proposal preparation, research, marketing initiatives, and networking activities.
- Mentor Associates and interns through coaching, knowledge sharing, and on-the-job support.
- Participate in internal initiatives focused on process improvement, methodology development, quality, and training.
- Support recruiting and onboarding activities within the Valuation Services practice.
- Develop deeper expertise in an industry vertical or valuation niche and share relevant knowledge with the team.
- Contribute to the development of internal resources, templates, and best practices.
- Participate in firm-wide events, committees, and community activities that support Dean Dorton's culture.
- Commit to ongoing professional learning and credential attainment to strengthen technical expertise and client service quality.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field required.
- CPA,CVA, ASA, or ABV designation (or active pursuit) strongly preferred.
- Minimum of four (4) to six (6) years of experience in business valuation or financial consulting, including supervisory experience.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with advanced Excel and financial modeling proficiency.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience drafting valuation reports.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

- Business Valuation Resources (BVR), Kroll, and TagniFi
- Power BI or other data visualization tools
