Phlebotomist at Katmai
Summary
Collect, identify, label, process, and transport blood specimens while following proper patient identification, infection control, and safety procedures. Provide professional and compassionate care to patients of varying ages and health conditions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Collect blood samples from patients.
- Practice proper patient identification, especially when working on hospital floors.
- Label vials with patient names and dates.
- Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient.
- Transport all specimen samples to a nearby laboratory.
- Centrifuge blood samples in accordance with applicable state regulations and requirements.
- Work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status.
- Practice infection control and Personal Protective Equipment standards.
- Complete extensive standardized training and demonstrate competency to perform each job function and commit to perform only those tasks for which documented training has been completed.
- Provide instruction and training as requested following designation of Preceptor/Instructor status.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a high school equivalent and completion of an approved program by the certifying body.
- Must possess a certification and registration as a Phlebotomy Technician from one of the following certifying agencies: the American Society of Clinical Pathology (PBT-ASCP), the American Medical Technologists (RPT-AMT), American Certification Agency (CPT- ACA), American Medical Certification Association (PTC-AMCA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCPT-NCCT/MMCI), or National Health career Association (CPT-NHA).
- Must have an Active BLS Certification.
- Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
Desired Qualifications & Skills
- Previous experience performing venipuncture and specimen collection.
- Strong patient service and communication skills.
- Knowledge of infection control and safety procedures.
- Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Work Schedule
Full-time. May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in a clinical laboratory setting with exposure to biological specimens, chemicals, reagents, laboratory equipment, and biological waste. Position requires frequent interaction with laboratory personnel and adherence to established safety, quality control, and infection control procedures.
Physical Demands
Position requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, and repetitive use of hands for handling tissue specimens, laboratory instruments, and equipment. Employee may be required to lift and carry laboratory supplies and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Position requires close visual attention and fine motor skills when embedding and sectioning tissue and operating laboratory equipment.
