Database Administrator (DBA) – Remote

We’re looking for a Database Administrator with an unwavering passion for keeping critical systems running reliably, securely, and fast. Most of the work we do is on large-scale, enterprise-wide systems (both commercial and government)—this project in particular will help ensure the uninterrupted, secure, and compliant operation of critical federal acquisition and assistance systems.

You’ll be part of a multi-disciplinary, agile application development team responsible for administering the databases behind an enterprise government system. Our Postgres and HP Vertica databases are hosted directly on EC2 instances—not on a managed service like AWS RDS—so you’ll own the full scope of database administration that a managed service would otherwise handle for us.

• Administer PostgreSQL and HP Vertica databases running on self-managed EC2 instances, including installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades.
• Own backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes end-to-end, since these aren’t provided automatically as they would be on a managed service.
• Configure and maintain high availability, replication, and failover for both database engines.
• Monitor database and underlying instance health (performance, storage, connections, query behavior) and tune accordingly.
• Manage database security: access controls, encryption, credential rotation, and compliance with federal security requirements.
• Administer HP Vertica’s MPP/columnar architecture specifically—cluster management, workload management, and query optimization.
• Collaborate with Software Engineers, DevOps Engineers, and Product Managers to support application data needs and troubleshoot production issues.
• Tackle a wide variety of technical problems, including infrastructure-level issues that a managed service would normally abstract away.

You’re comfortable owning a database end-to-end, without the guardrails a managed service provides. You don’t just know how to write queries—you know how to keep a production database healthy, secure, and recoverable when you’re the one responsible for the infrastructure underneath it. You welcome change as a positive (instead of viewing it as “rework”) and never consider anything you deliver “final.” Although you understand that what you deliver may not be complete, you never knowingly deliver something that is wrong or of poor quality. You actively contribute to a learning team culture, offering and receiving feedback with curiosity and respect.

You have:

• A bachelor's degree or commensurate experience
• 5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator in enterprise environments
• Hands-on experience administering PostgreSQL on self-managed infrastructure (not a managed service like RDS)—including backup/restore, replication, performance tuning, and security hardening
• Experience administering HP Vertica including cluster management, workload management, and query optimization
• Experience running production databases directly on EC2, including OS-level patching, storage management, networking, and monitoring/alerting without managed-service automation
• Solid understanding of backup/DR strategy and high-availability/failover configuration
• Passion for learning new technologies and the ability to do so quickly
• Agile Development and Mindset
• Familiarity with SQL and database security/compliance best practices in a federal or regulated environment is a plus

The salary range for this role is $145,000 to $165,000 annually.
