The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science has an opening for aDirector of Pharmacy at the Spring Grove Hospital Centerlocated on 200 acresin Catonsville, MD. Spring Grove Hospital Center is the largest facility operated by the Maryland Behavioral Health Administration and the second oldest continually operating psychiatric facility in the United States. The Director of Pharmacy directs and coordinates all pharmacy activities, including clinical services, performance improvement, dispensing, and the purchasing, receipt, and storage of pharmaceuticals. Collaborates with leadership, administrators, directors, and staff within the Spring Grove Hospital community in order to ensure the deliverance of high quality pharmacy services, safe, effective and appropriate medication treatment and compliance with legal, regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Essential Functions:


  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, disposal of hazardous waste drugs, maintenance of inventory, and record keeping.


  • Maintains and nurtures effective communication and partnerships.


  • Partners with upper level administrators and other directors on a regular basis in setting strategic goals/objectives and budgets, and/or in fostering improvements in policies/procedures for the entire department and hospital.


  • Ensures efficient recruitment/interviewing and training functions to continually review strengths and weaknesses in maintaining a staff of well-trained, highly involved, and motivated employees.


  • Leads performance improvement processes related to medication treatment including medication use evaluation, adverse event monitoring and medication error monitoring.


  • Provides general direction and leadership for all aspects of departmental functions in order to maintain their efficient operation.


  • Works with the School of Pharmacy’s Mental Health Program to implement statewide programs and initiatives.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:Bachelors in Pharmacy.


Experience: Seven (7) years progressively building a background in the various pharmacy departmental functions; psychiatric and clinical experience preferred.


Supervisory: Two (2) years of experience at a management/leadership level.


Licensure/Certification: Able to secure and retain an active State of Maryland Pharmacist license for employment.


Other: Drug Screening is required for employment.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their indications, interactions and potential side effects.


  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant physiology, pathophysiology and disease states.


  • Skill in the assessment of patients and their drug regimens.


  • Skill in the development of pharmacotherapeutic plans.


  • Skill in teaching health professional and stakeholders.


  • Skill in communicating with people of all levels.


  • Excellent organization and time management skills.


  • Skill in use of relevant PC applications including MS Word relevant library databases including Medline.


  • Excellent skills in data analysis using Excel.


  • Knowledge of relevant accreditation and certification requirements.
