Position Description :

The Mental Health Technician:

• Delivers patient care that is patient and family centered.

• Incorporates team focused, collegial relationships to ensure patient safety and improve outcomes.

• Maintains organizational competencies of superior quality care, critical thinking and interpersonal skills.

• Demonstrates accountability to the patient, family, self and the healthcare team.

• Provides superior quality care and assumes responsibility and accountability for their role in performance outcomes while promoting the core values of the UPHS health system.

Minimum Requirements :

  1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited program in an area of human services, which includes, but may not be limited to the following: sociology, political science, counseling, criminal justice, pastoral counseling, elementary/special education of family therapy, and, a minimum of one (1) year direct care experience or supervised practice in lieu of the experience requirement.


  1. Two (2) years direct care experience and high school diploma (or equivalency) plus twelve (12) semester credit hours from an approved educational program.


  1. Valid Child Abuse (Act 33) (when applicable), Criminal History, and FBI clearances (when applicable).

  2. Participation in and completion of all CBH mandatory in-services (must be completed within three (3) months of hire and annually from the date of the initial training).

  3. Participation in at least ten (10) hours of documented additional in-service per year (“year” is defined as twelve (12) months after date of hire).

    Additional Information :

The inpatient, acute, psychiatric unit on Wright 5 provides short-term psychiatric management for admitted patients who are experiencing an acute mental disorder or an acute exacerbation of a chronic psychiatric disorder, and may/may not have a secondary addiction diagnosis. Care is offered to all persons, voluntary and involuntary, regardless of race, religion, natural origin, creed, sex or ability to pay. The department of psychiatry is committed to providing treatment and support in the least restrictive setting possible.

Wright 5 is a locked, (twenty-two bed) acute care services unit which admits adults on a voluntary or involuntary commitment status. A therapeutic milieu is maintained through group activities, interactions within the patient community, staff interactions, and emphasis on each person’s responsibility for self. The overall goal of the unit is to provide a therapeutic milieu for acutely ill patients and to restore them to their optimal level of functioning in the community. It is recognized that psychiatric services are part of a continuum of professional services connected with other community resources. Effective communication and cooperation with these resources are facilitated and maintained. Emphasis is placed on maintaining continuity of care at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Community Mental Health Centers and Psychiatric Emergency Services in order to facilitate timely discharge. Care is provided 24 hours a day.
