Assurant has an exciting opportunity for an Accounting Director, Preneed!

This position is an important resource in the Global Accounting organization and a primary area of responsibilities leading the accounting teams, supporting the Preneed Business Segment. It oversees the maintenance of financial records and preparation of financial reports ensuring appropriate accounting for the Preneed Segment. Establishes direction for appropriate accounting measures for Life and other long duration Insurance business both under US GAAP and US statutory accounting basis. Establishes procedures and internal controls to ensure accurate accounting and reporting, as well as, compliance with all relevant government and industry regulations. Leverages skills, experience, and expertise to implement best/leading practices in areas of responsibility. Leverages deep knowledge of Life Insurance/Long Duration accounting and related systems and controls to support these activities. Works closely with business, actuarial, operations and finance team to ensure accurate financial information is provided.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • The Director, Accounting Preneed will set priorities and make critical decisions to drive operational effectiveness and efficiencies that impact the day to day accounting operations and control environment.
  • Monitor and implement internal controls in conjunction with corporate policies as necessary to ensure reporting integrity, safeguard company assets, identify and manage financial risks.
  • Meet regularly with key stakeholders from business, actuarial, operations and finance to review financial results, fluctuations to plan and prior period actuals.
  • Ensure appropriate measures are taken for new and/or changing business /regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with actuarial and finance team to review data, assumptions and resulting reserve calculations.
  • May serve on segment finance leadership team.
  • Responsible for maximizing return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems.
  • Responsible for the oversight of all accounting operations including A/R, A/P, Financial Reporting and review of Life Insurance Reserves
  • Manage month-end closing and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly and year-end reporting packages.
  • Provide status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.
  • Point of contact with internal and external auditors, coordinating the preparation of requested documentation and support of various audits.
  • Remain current on changes in accounting policy (both US GAAP and US statutory), assess their impact and takes the appropriate actions to timely and accurately implement changes, as appropriate
  • Partner with Assurant Accounting Policy resources to ensure compliance with corporate standards and the implementation of the targeted improvements to Long Duration Contract accounting under US GAAP.
  • Oversee team ensuring work is done according to appropriate standards & guidelines and meeting all deliverables; coach and train team members; embrace leadership training, continuing professional education and career development for staff and self; collaborate with peers to develop and maintain high-performance teams
  • Have a mindset of continuous process improvement enabling upgrades, to process, system automation and other change to controls to drive improvement & efficiency partnering with other teams in a productive and collaborative environment.
  • Manage a team of Accountants and Analysts


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent area of study
  • CPA or equivalent certification.
  • 10 years prior financial accounting and management experience & at least 7 years on life and other long duration insurance contracts.
  • Strong Life Insurance/Long Duration accounting background required.
  • Strong knowledge about the insurance industry and accounting basis under US GAAP and US statutory accounting
  • Ability to interact with actuaries to assess accounting implication of new products and understanding the reserve changes and DAC amortization.
  • 10% Travel

Preferred Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to influence without direct authority
  • Prior accounting systems experience
  • Public Accounting firm experience
  • FMLI certification
  • Previous experience on transformation projects a plus
  • Knowledge of latest changes in US GAAP on Long Duration Insurance Contracts Targeted Improvements is preferred.
  • Strong change management acumen.
  • Adaptability and flexibility, including the ability to manage deadline pressure, ambiguity and change.
  • Proficiency with financial statement analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and US statutory Accounting
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports and legal documents and assess their impact.
  • Ability to respond effectively to requests from business partners and senior management.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the organization.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with colleagues and business partners.
  • Must demonstrate the highest standards of professional integrity and promote ethical business behavior throughout the organization.
  • Ability to lead and motivate teams to reach a common goal.
