The Woodbourne Center's new Vocational Program is an extension of the Woodbourne School and aims to give our students and youth from the community the real-world, tangible skills they can use to be successful in their future careers and continuing education. We believe that when youth who are in need are equipped with opportunities to grow educationally that they will have an even greater hope and sense of confidence in their ability to be successful. Students will learn carpentry skills in the new carpentry program. The Vocational Program Assistant will essentially assist the Vocational Program Teacher and Supervisor with vocational instruction and demonstrate safe practices while supervising and supporting students. The Vocational Program Assistant will in collaboration with the Carpentry Teacher, assist in development of the carpentry program to provide students the skills they need to succeed in class and in the world beyond.


  • Demonstrate safe and effective use of vocational program tools and equipment while assisting the teacher with instruction.
  • Monitor the vocational classroom environment and protocols to ensure students are safely operating equipment.
  • Provide supervision to ensure that all students are wearing proper safety equipment.
  • Assist with cataloging, tracking, and auditing all tools and equipment after purchase and after use.
  • Assist the teacher and supervisor with recommendations for potential equipment purchases and repairs.
  • Understand how to use vocational equipment as needed per the curriculum.
  • Guide and monitor students who are learning to use equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining a positive learning environment by monitoring student resident behavior, redirecting residents when issues arise, and assisting with restraints when necessary.
  • Provide client supervision and mentorship.
  • Serve as mentor and role model by demonstrating compassion and understanding for feelings, opinions and experiences of others, and communicating and interacting in a manner that is honest, positive, respectful and professional.
  • Ensure student resident safety and collaborate with co-workers to maintain an environment that is positive, respectful, clean and safe.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required by Nexus. Understand and support the Nexus philosophy and treatment modalities.
  • Uphold Nexus policy and procedures regarding student resident confidentiality
  • Perform other responsibilities, tasks and projects as needed.


  • Demonstrates strong communication and organizational skills to generate required documentation and reporting that is legible and articulate, and to interface effectively with student resident population and staff within both the school and residential setting
  • Exhibits ability to effectively carry out lesson plans in teacher's short-term absence and to effectively provide educational assistance to students on assigned subject materials, projects and assignments
  • Exhibits a spirit of cooperation among co-workers with the ultimate goal of achieving the best learning environment possible for our students while insuring appropriate supervision and safety
  • Displays ethical conduct and professionalism at all times, with particular emphasis on maintaining a healthy relationship and appropriate boundaries with student/residents to insure a positive, effective learning environment..
  • Adhere to department procedures regarding punctuality and attendance and exhibit flexibility and cooperation with scheduling and rotation needs.
  • Strive to gain an understanding of basic child and adolescent development principles, in an effort to model and reinforce fundamentals of positive youth development.
  • Continually seek knowledge of and an understanding of differences in gender, race, age, culture, ethnicity, class religion and disability, to eliminate biases towards differing talents, abilities, sexual orientation and faiths.
  • Remain current on all required training and certifications
