Boston Medical Center seeks a full-time genetic counselor to join the Cancer Care Center with the possibility for diversified clinical roles over time. The counselor will provide comprehensive genetics consultation and services to adults and families at risk of hereditary cancer syndromes. The genetic counselor must be self-directed, perform at a high level of independence, and seek case consultation as needed. Participation in faculty and staff education, cancer conferences and committees, tumor boards, and hospital quality assurance programs is expected. He/she would also be expected to supervise genetic counseling students (when possible) and teach in the Boston University M.S. Genetic Counseling Program working alongside a team clinical genetic counselors and program leadership.


The counselor provides comprehensive genetics consultation services in the realm of oncology. Specifically, risk assessment for a heredity cancer predisposition is performed for each patient based on collection of personal and family history information. Duties include eliciting appropriate family history and conveying genetic, medical and technical information including diagnosis, etiology, natural history, prognosis and treatment/management of genetic condition and documenting findings in electronic medical records. The counselor also provides facilitation of genetic testing (and insurance coverage/funding) and communicates test results to patient and providers. Collects, analyzes, interprets, and summarizes medical, genetic, and family data to facilitate course of action for patients and families and to support quality assurance programs.


Identify, analyze, interpret, and summarize pertinent medical, genetic, and family data. Record significant content of all discussions, compose detailed summaries, and document in electronic medical record.


Provide face-to-face counseling to patients related to genetic assessment and risks and coordinate laboratory testing.


As appropriate, evaluate and discuss hereditary cancer syndromes, inheritance patterns and genetic testing.


Describe and ensure understanding of implications and outcomes of genetic testing and surveillance recommendations to patients and family members in order to ensure that patients are informed and understand options.


Review patient and provider referrals to Genetic Counseling to determine appropriateness and to assess for urgency. Schedule patients to ensure that patients with time-sensitive needs are seen in appropriate timeframe.


Oversee additional administrative details including record-keeping, maintaining patient-related statistics, progress notes, preparing encounter forms, and genetic summary forms as necessary.


Communicate with designated provider team member including primary care, attending oncologist, etc.


Facilitate insurance authorization and coverage and communicate payment requirements to patients and family members


Promote understanding of genetic science through the training and supervision of genetic counseling students and medical students.


Work as member of health care team to provide comprehensive patient care.


Monitor trends and developments in the genetic counseling field as well as in the community by reading appropriate professional literature and attending appropriate lectures, conferences, rounds, and regional/national meetings.


Provide educational programs. Prepare and conduct lectures, meetings, and departmental in-services, Grand Rounds, Fellows' conference, etc. Act as an educational resource on genetic counseling issues.


Establish and maintain inter- and intra-disciplinary professional relationships to function as part of a health care delivery team.


Act as liaison between laboratories/clinics, patients, and referring physicians.


Participate in preparing for American College of Surgeon's accreditation survey by preparing documentation required for survey application and site visit.


Attend weekly Breast Health conference/Breast Tumor board.


Serve as member of Commission on Cancer Committee.


Comply with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.


Demonstrate use of quality improvement in daily operations.


Comply with all health and safety regulations and requirements.


Respect diverse views and approaches, and contribute in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.


Utilize hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals.


Perform other similar and related duties as required or requested.


Master's Degree in Medical Genetics or completion of an ABGC accredited Genetic Counseling training program.


Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). * May hire Board eligible candidates, but certification must be completed within 90 days of employment.


Massachusetts State License as a Genetic Counselor.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to explain procedures and to allay the apprehension of patients; and to interact effectively with patients, families/visitors, physicians, managers, colleagues, and employees.
  • Excellent listening skills, ability to diagnose problems, and to develop practical and sensible solutions.
  • Excellent English communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. Additional language skill(s) that serve our patient population is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including strong attention to detail and the ability to manage time effectively.
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) and web/internet is required. Experience with standard hospital registration systems is a plus.
