Background of this search: The main function of the Knowledge, Innovation and Communication (KIC) Sector is to: (i) help the IDB Group to identify, build, apply, and disseminate high-quality knowledge, as well as to develop and use learning products that enable the building of technical and general competencies; (ii) promote an internal culture of innovation by providing experience, networks, and methodologies and expediting the adoption of innovative solutions; and (iii) expand the audience that uses the Bank's products and position the brand through internal and external communication.

The Innovation and Creativity Division (KIC/ICD) supports strengthening the Bank's internal capacities to innovate through raising awareness, building capacity, and developing innovative and creative products to development challenges. We collect and disseminate lessons learned from innovative practices; design and implement capacity building products for IDB Group teams, while leveraging strategic partnerships with the private sector and academia to catalyze innovation; and facilitate the design of innovative products which have the potential to be replicable and scalable in the Latin American and Caribbean region through the adoption of disruptive technologies and creativity.

The team's mission: As part of KIC/ICD's effort to foster innovation within the IDB Group, the division is striving to make future trends tangible so Bank teams can prepare for the complexity of tomorrow. The division's Data Insights offering seeks to align Bank teams' priorities with emerging trends – leveraging trend research, as well as external and internal data sets to determine new pathways. First, by conducting research on emerging and cutting-edge technologies, solutions, and trends, KIC/ICD is helping Bank teams to keep up to date with the latest developments, incorporate an outside perspective into their sector-specific work, and implement innovative solutions for their clients. Second, by facilitating access to and usage of external and internal data sets, KIC/ICD is helping Bank teams to gain insights into unknown correlations, patterns, and trends among data and to leverage these insights to design relevant solutions for their clients. To that end, the Bank is maintaining a portal for offering data opportunities, managing proposals for accessing data sets, and sharing documentation and support resources around those data sets and a data engineering infrastructure for ingestion, provisioning, and analysis of data.

What you'll do:

  • Conduct trend research to support Bank teams in keeping up to date with emerging and cutting-edge technologies, solutions, and trends around a diverse set of fields, incorporating an outside perspective into their sector-specific work, and maximizing impact in IDB Group operational projects by enabling the implementation of innovative solutions for the Bank's clients.
  • Facilitate Bank teams in utilizing external and internal data sets in research and operational projects. This includes promoting the available data offering across Bank teams, identifying opportunities to leverage data in operational projects, reviewing proposals for accessing data sets available in the Bank's data catalogue, facilitating provisioning of data sets, conducting onboarding sessions to bring Bank teams up to speed with utilizing unfamiliar data sets, as well as supporting Bank teams in leveraging data sets to gain insights relevant for their projects.
  • Support the further development of data science capacity across IDB Group teams. This includes identification of data analysis needs among Bank teams (data needs, tool needs, training needs, etc.).
  • Promote best practices in data science across IDB Group teams and guide data scientists in solving specific questions and challenges around the use of data. This includes technical (such as source code management, documentation, etc.), legal (data license agreement compliance, etc.), and ethical (data privacy, data security, etc.) aspects of collecting, storing, using, sharing, archiving, and destroying data.
  • Facilitate the creation of a community of data scientists across IDB Group teams, as well as with partner organizations by promoting collaboration among data scientists and facilitating knowledge transfer between teams. This includes monitoring progress of data science projects, facilitate sharing of results, experiences, and lessons learned from projects, support the organization of periodic knowledge sharing events in collaboration with partner organizations, and facilitate peer programming across data science teams.
  • Contribute to the further elaboration KIC/ICD's internal Data Insights offering to better support Bank teams in leveraging trend research, as well as external and internal data sets in research and operational projects. Keep up to speed with changing data science methods, technologies, and tools. Explore new opportunities to leverage data to help the IDB Group fulfill its mission of improving lives.

What you'll need:

  • Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB Group.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Data Sciences, Computer Sciences, Engineering or an equivalent discipline with focus on data ingestion, processing, analysis, and visualization. Master's degree or equivalent preferable but not required.
  • Experience: at least 3 years of work experience.
  • Languages: You are fluent (oral and written) in both English and Spanish. Additional fluency in Portuguese and/or French is a plus.

Core and Technical Competencies:

  • Besides good coding skills and a comprehensive understanding of the data lifecycle, you have at least 3 years of experience in data analysis (with focus on languages and tools such as Python, JupyterLab, R, R Studio, and/or Stata) and data visualization (Tableau and/or Power BI).
  • Experiences with big data, machine learning (Amazon Sage Maker, Scikit-Learn), and geospatial analysis (Esri ArcGIS, GeoPandas) tools and methods are a plus.
  • Experiences with cloud-based data storage (Amazon S3, Azure Data Lake, Azure File Share) and computation technologies (Apache Hardoop, Apache Spark, Azure Databricks) are also a plus.
  • In addition, knowledge about data engineering processes and tools, along with experiences with trend research and market intelligence (CB Insights) would be ideal.
  • You have excellent qualitative as well as quantitative research skills.
  • You are a team player and connect easily with people, both inside and outside the organization.
  • You have good communication and presentation skills and have experiences in explaining complex technical concepts to audiences without subject-matter background.
  • You are results oriented.
  • Project management experiences are a plus.
