This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for STEM to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Serves as a Supervisor Drill Rig Operator for Omaha District, which is one of the nine Drilling Production Centers. Responsible for work activities involved in the accomplishment of core drilling operations and explorations being conducted throughout the district.

  • Provides technical and administrative leadership for and directs and guides the work .activities of the drill crews
  • Assigns drill crews to specific jobs, explaining work requirements, standards of production, and schedules to be met, answering any questions to insure a complete understanding of the work to be accomplished.
  • Evaluates progress of work through review of reports and by visiting work sites throughout the district to assure that quality standards and quantity requirements are being followed.
  • Checks adequacy of personnel assigned to specific tasks, determining whether improvement can be made by taking action to change personnel, equipment, etc.
  • Determines priority order of work on hand, taking into consideration urgency indicated by superior and abilities of available employees.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Drill Rig Operator Supervisor without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform some tasks including advanced drilling techniques on mechanically driven geotechnical drill rigs. I have assisted a journeyman worker in using advanced drilling equipment, drilling techniques and procedures to ensure proper site modification prior to drilling, proper equipment and materials are available for the job. I repair, operate, maintain, and perform routine repairs of drill rig equipment. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews my work for completion. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)
  • Physical Effort: Work is primarily performed in the field requiring good physical strength and stamina. Work requires standing, walking, or bending most of a work day, frequent and repeated lifting of objects in excess of 60 pounds, use of both hands and feet to operate machinery, good pulmonary function to allow the use of a level C respirator, good balance and coordination, good dexterity for assembling and disassembling drill pipe, and tolerance of heat and cold.
  • Working Conditions: Work is conducted in the field up to 90% of the time. During these assignments, subjected to conditions that are very hot and cold, wet, dusty, icy, muddy, and windy. Also exposed to biological hazards such as biting insects, snakes, poison ivy, etc. Significant amount of work at HTRW sites where chemical contaminates are present and personal protective equipment is required. Grease, oil, and other lubricants as well as fuels are present during operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and accessories.
