Position Description

The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a well-qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate in Microbiology, Environmental Engineering, or comparable discipline for the Biological & Chemical Science & Engineering Department. This postdoctoral researcher will be a key contributor to a multidisciplinary team of researchers studying interactions between microorganisms and metals critical to clean energy technologies. Research interests include both the application of microorganisms to recover and refine such metals (e.g., rare earth elements, cobalt, nickel, tellurium, etc.) and the impacts of such metals and associated processing reagents on microbial activities and community compositions. The outcome of the research has the potential to reduce the costs and environmental impacts of metal recovery and production, and to support the domestic transition to renewable energy technologies. The candidate will contribute to development of research strategies, design and execute laboratory experiments, and perform data analysis and interpretation. Experience in fundamental or applied biogeochemistry, microbial cultivation and assessment of microbial activity is required, and expertise in genomics, transcriptomics, and or other omics is an advantage.

The candidate is expected to be a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team and work effectively both alone and as a team member. The candidate must be self-motivated but also take direction from other team members and peers.

The position entails writing scientific manuscripts for journal publication, and presentation of research results at national and international conferences and meetings.
