The Sr. Embedded Systems Engineer will work with a small state-of-the-art R&D team in Boise to bring new ideas to life that will help transform the material handling industry. They will utilize the latest technologies to integrate robotics into material handling systems for complex applications. This includes R&D and prototype development to successfully bring new products to market. The process involves understanding the customer's goals and objectives and developing engineered solutions to meet these goals.


General Job Duties



  • Assist Robotic and Mechanical Engineering on project design
  • Spearhead embedded systems roadmap for all current and future projects
  • Design architectures and schematics for successful embedded systems projects with regards to system functionality, customer satisfaction, schedule, time, and budget
  • Develop firmware architecture and code for embedded systems projects
  • Document functional specifications to support embedded systems projects
  • Come up with schedule and plan that maintain JIRA project while communicating it with managers
  • Remain up to date on all industry trends and new research in order help train and develop team members
  • Foster a cross collaboration environment with other divisions within Bastian
  • Introduce and present new technology concepts to the team
  • Track projects and report progress and issues to the engineering manager
  • Assist in resolving engineering issues as they arise by working closely with the engineering team, vendors, and the shop
  • Ensure we meet and exceed our customer's expectations through superior design and implementation
  • Complete all administrative tasks/paperwork in timely manner
  • Work with management to prioritize projects on macro level; ability to prioritize individual tasks on your own
  • Work with management to develop process standards within the department
  • Attend training and become certified in applicable controls technologies or programs

Superior Performance Objectives



  • Knowledge of microcontrollers, PLCs, industrial robots, safety rated equipment, encoders, networking, circuits, AC/DC motors and motor controllers, etc.
  • Understanding of automated equipment and systems, panel design, firmware design, regulatory practices and schematics
  • Some experience with panel design experience, hands on and mechanical capabilities, controls project management experience
  • Experience with machine vision and material handling a plus
  • Requirements
  • 8+ years' experience in a firmware engineer or embedded systems engineer position
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, or related field
  • Proficient in C/C++, Python, and other common development languages
  • Microcontroller firmware experience
  • Real-Time Operating System (RTOS)
  • Serial digital communication knowledge (UART, I2C, CAN, SPI, USB)
  • PCB schematic and layout design experience through Altium or related software
  • Experience driving agile process for project pacing and delegating to other contributors
  • Need demonstrated project management and time tracking management
  • Come up with schedule and plan that maintain JIRA project while communicating it with managers
  • Strong background in influencing type role with presentation skills
  • Driving the team to learn and research new projects and technology
  • Background in a collaborative role with multiple disciplines
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining progress toward completing overall goal
  • Ability to write thorough documentation for new software and processes
  • Ability to mentor and guide people to meet their goals
  • Self-guided and proactive learner
  • Aptitude for hands on electrical and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Extremely computer literate with MS Office products
  • Excellent problem solving and time management skills
  • Embedded systems experience
  • Aptitude for hands on electrical and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Ability to travel up to 25% for training & work purposes
  • Must be eligible to work in the USA long term without sponsorship.
