PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Hiring salary: $21.00/hour This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act This is an on call position that does not have set hours or schedule The deadline to submit applications is Tuesday, April 9, 2024. However, it is subject to close at any time without prior notice once a sufficient pool of qualified applicants is obtained Sign On Bonus: New employees are eligible for a $1,500 bonus; with $750 paid on the first payroll, and $750 paid upon successful completion of the 6 month introductory period OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT The Courtroom Assistant I performs clerical duties in support of the judicial activities and operation of the Aurora Municipal Court PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepares, maintains and routes court files
  • Coordinates and provides information to various parties for case disposition including follow ups with defendants, witnesses and attorneys and jurors
  • Maintains communication between the court and other City departments
  • Swears in witnesses, escorts defendants, witnesses and jurors and takes charge of jurors assigned to courtroom
  • Maintains, executes and serves court documents
  • Maintains order in the courtroom, announces the Judge
  • Moves case files to other divisions to expedite court docket
  • Coordinates interpreters for defendants and witnesses as needed
  • Prepares courtroom for court docket
  • Requests information and assistance from the Marshal’s Division
  • Opens and closes court
  • Prepares court reporter log when court reporter is absent
  • Provides information on case dispositions by way of computer system
  • Enters court notes and dispositions in the court database
  • Conduct virtual meetings for assigned division and monitor audio and video recordings
  • Maintains and troubleshoots courtroom equipment as needed
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least one (1) year of experience in data entry, clerical and customer service experience including experience in a law enforcement or judicial environment
  • Court proceedings and terminology
  • Grammar and spelling including legal terminology
  • Skill in using personal computers, specifically Microsoft Office suite, including word processing, and spreadsheet software applications
  • Skill using Teams, WebEx and other software used in virtual meeting programs
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Be assertive and maintain order and decorum in the court room
  • Confidence in public speaking
  • Compose routine reports
  • Prepare forms and records accurately

Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
  • Sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds
  • Occasional lifting and carrying
  • Moderate to considerate walking and standing
  • Clear vision to reading and reviewing written material and documents
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees, justice system personnel and citizens
  • Hand/eye coordination for operation of audio/visual equipment used in courtroom, computer terminal and office equipment
Work Environment:
  • Works primarily in a clean, comfortable courtroom environment
Equipment Used:
  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer
  • Audio/visual equipment
  • This position may require incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, etc.) in the course of their employment
