The Executive Communications Lead develops executive messaging and external communications strategies; manages the CEO’s social media profiles; manages logistics and briefing materials for the executive’s outside speaking engagements; develops and implements an internal communications strategy that articulates Oxfam America’s senior leaders’ vision and strategy to OUS employees; has their finger on the pulse of staff morale, needs, interests and concerns; and manages overall coordination of projects and support on key internal strategic initiatives. May stand-in for the Chief of Staff if needed.

This position will coordinate with the Executive Office; Senior Leadership Team (SLT); Strategy and People, Culture, and HR (PCHR) staff; Public Engagement team members; Senior Development Officer and Executive Office Communications; Boston and DC unions; Technology Information Management (TIM)  Team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Executive Communications

  • Lead strategy development of CEO’s external engagement that sets priorities and helps determine meetings, events, and spaces where CEO spends their time and uses their voice.
  • Develop and implement a process for CEO public facing events and partner with Senior Development Officer and Executive Office Communications role to lead or support the CEO on executive speeches, talking points, presentations, and communications to Board.
  • Collaborate with Media Relations Director and Chief of Staff to manage the president’s social media platforms, including X and LinkedIn; develop strategy for platform growth and draft relevant posts in coordination with OUS digital team.
  • Manage logistics for president’s external speaking engagement; liaise with outside contacts/ event planners; and working with Senior Development Officer draft or edit briefing notes as needed to ensure consistency. Staff CEO as needed at public events.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Public Engagement, and Global Brand Lead to ensure internal messaging and communications are aligned with marketing and brand-related communication efforts and that these together drive alignment between brand and employees.
  • Serve as communications advisor to executives, senior management, and organization, coaching leadership team on effective communication as needed.

Internal Communications Management

  • Develop and implement an internal communications strategy that reinforces OUS' strategic framework, mission, and culture, and aligns with core values, gender justice, and racial equity; the strategy will communicate decisions and messages around core agency priorities, the Oxfam America’s 2030 Strategic Framework and agency results, and best practices as well as key agency initiatives and organizational change processes.
  • Serve as liaison to Oxfam International internal communications network; collaborating on internal communications plans and ensuring alignment with OI plans and messaging.
  • Key contributor in the area of communications to organization wide initiatives relating to change processes and implementations of strategies and organizational development.
  • Lead on all staff engagement and communications.

Strategic Staff Engagement

  • Maintain a keen awareness of staff engagement levels and develop channels to regularly gather input and feedback from staff in response to executive and organization communications; this includes creating opportunities for staff to connect with each other and with the CEO; investing time in comprehending the needs, interests, and concerns of all staff; developing and tracking staff communications as part of a strategic internal communications plan to create a dynamic work culture; and conducting periodic measurement of staff responses to key initiatives, sharing measurement results and insights with the SLT.
  • Work with the Strategy Team, Special Assistant and Advisor to the Executive Office, and Chief of Staff to manage agendas, materials, and technology as well as facilitate, as needed, monthly all staff, manager, and director meetings. Determine and facilitate additional spaces for staff to connect with one another and with the CEO and SLT.
  • Write President’s report for quarterly Board meeting and accompanying talking points; project manage staff-board meetings and related staff-board communications in partnership with rotating staff-selected board member; support prep for Board Chair in advance of staff-board meetings and support ongoing relevant board-staff communications

Strategic Initiatives Support

  • Collaborate with the Gender Justice & Inclusion Hub and People & Culture team and People, Culture and HR to help ensure sufficient focus/attention is in place with the organization to drive to achieving the mission of becoming and anti-racist and gender just organization.
  • Support the SLT, Director, Media and Public Relations, and other key stakeholders on internal crisis communication, and the internal facing communication related to external crises; ensure timely communication with key internal stakeholder audiences as part of a robust crisis communications plan.
  • Serve as business owner of internal intranet (Compass); develop and implement both systems design and content strategy. Monitor and update Oxfam America Workplace site.
  • Support development and staff use, training, and socialization of digital workplace and tools (workplace, teams, zoom, compass, etc.).
  • Partner with SLT on change and crises management strategies, project management, and communications plan/implementation relating to all major organizational changes and internal response to external crises. This includes developing timeline, transition, and stakeholder engagement plans, as well as drafting all reactives, talking points, and communications.
  • Where needed, lead critical special projects teams, including developing and managing workstreams, staff engagement and communication, and managing consultant relationships support.

People & Culture Partnership and Support

  • Partner with PCHR team on staff engagement, wellness, and recognition, including event coordination.
  • Coordinate with PCHR to regularly review and help update new hire orientation materials, and support onboarding strategies.

  • Advanced Degree; or a combination of education and experience
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience executing internal communications projects and programs in a complex and fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including editing and presentation skills.
  • Highly experienced in social media platforms, Windows and Microsoft Office applications or equivalent, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; high level of comfort with electronic communications, Microsoft Outlook preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work in a multicultural environment with ease.
  • Ability to anticipate, coordinate, and facilitate activities with colleagues.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Track record and demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations with diplomacy and discretion.
  • Experience promoting and supporting key, sensitive initiatives in an organization.
  • Ability to conduct and analyze measurement of communications program.
  • Ability to advise with credibility senior executives on communications matters, including creation of and delivery of their own communications as well as managerial communications planning.
  • Proficiency with multi-media and video-conferencing technology.


Salary range is $90,000 – 95,000.
