The Division of Public Health is currently seeking a Health Education Specialist Sr. to work in the Division of Public Health. This is a limited-service position and is based out of the Central Office in downtown Boise, Idaho. Telework is available.

This exciting, new position will serve the entire division and support existing work related to program communications and marketing by enhancing strategic and coordinated efforts across all programs. The Health Education Specialist Sr. will report to the Communications and Policy Manager in Public Health Administration’s Policy, Performance and Strategy.

This unique position will support programs in the development of Annual Public Information Plans; support and guide programs in development of campaign plans; serve as the liaison between Division of Public Health programs and the Department of Health and Welfare marketing contractor; work with programs and the Bureau of Equity and Strategic Partnerships to develop culturally and linguistically relevant communications; support the Communications and Policy Manager in developing proactive communications to stakeholders including policy-makers; oversee marketing surveys to the public that lead to a better understanding of impact and effectiveness of new and existing communication materials; and support Division of Public Health Administration as needed with development of annual plans, graphic designs and external communications.

This is a limited-service position. The length of limited-service appointments are determined by the availability of funds such as grants, alternative funding sources and/or timeframes such as pilot projects, alternative funding sources or program termination.

Example Of Duties

  • Advise programs on annual marketing and communication plans.
  • Provide technical expertise, staff training, and work direction in health education programs.
  • Coordinate health education efforts across division programs and in alignment with the Department of Health and Welfare’s Office of Communications.
  • Work closely with the division’s health equity leads to ensure communications are meaningful, relevant, and accessible.
  • Provide graphic design and editing support for division communications as needed.
  • Serve as the liaison between division programs and external marketing vendors.

Minimum Qualifications

You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position.   • Good knowledge of public health education principles and practices to include needs assessment, information dissemination and community organization relating to common health problems. Typically requires successful completion of the core requirements of a Bachelor's Degree in Health Education or Health Science that included at least nine credits of college coursework in public health education principles and practices such as: Foundations for Community Health Education; Community Health Education Planning and Evaluation; and Health Program Planning and Evaluation OR experience and on-the-job training working in public education that included the above elements AND approximately one year experience developing or reviewing and evaluating health-related informational material.
  • Good knowledge of basic disease etiologies and preventive strategies. Typically requires approximately 9 credits of college coursework in health and/or science such as microbiology, epidemiology, and human physiology AND approximately one year of experience in a health agency providing prevention services within the community.
  • Good knowledge of survey methods and basic statistics used to collect and interpret data. Typically requires approximately six credits of college coursework or equivalent OR on-the-job training and experience that covered survey methods and basic statistics used to collect, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Good knowledge of training methods. Typically requires completion of classes or workshops (16 hours) covering communication concepts, learning styles, course design, and presentation skills OR experience presenting formal training sessions to groups.
  • Experience developing or reviewing and evaluating health-related information material. Typically requires approximately one year of experience or equivalent college coursework in the health/science field that included developing or reviewing and evaluating health-related education materials such as brochures, fact sheets, and educational curricula.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating public health education programs. Typically requires approximately one year of related work experience.

Below is preferred experience. It is not required for the position but applicants with this experience may receive consideration over other applicants.

  • Ability to manage and adapt to a variable workflow cadence and demand. Typically gained by at least one year of professional work experience.
  • Experience with Adobe In Design, Photoshop, and other Adobe programs, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, or Smartsheets. Typically gained by successful completion of college coursework OR at least one year of professional work experience using these programs.
  • Ability to independently manage several different projects and tasks at a time and meet various deadlines. Typically gained by at least one year of previous work experience.
