We are currently seeking a talented and experienced Assistant Building Official to join our team of professionals. This position offers great opportunity for dynamic, motivated self-starters to work on a variety of work assignments. You’ll be a member of our highly respected team of professionals with a full complement of resources to support you and exciting projects to keep you challenged.

Job Requirements

  • Enforces and interprets the building code within the City; ensures compliance with the building code through plan reviews and inspections.
  • Creates and maintains policies and procedures for the Building Division.
  • Responds to questions from contractors, architects, building owners, and the public regarding the permitting process and code provisions.
  • Receives complaints from citizens, contractors, architects, attorneys, etc., investigates and provides satisfactory resolution.
  • Assists Chief Inspectors in making Florida Building Code interpretations
  • Attends permitting, inspection and plan review meetings.
  • Interviews candidates for employment and recommends in the interest of the City, that eligible applicants hired and that employees be transferred, promoted, reassigned, disciplined or terminated; participates in the administration of collective bargaining agreements and in the adjustment of grievances.
  • Attends meetings upon request, of the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals, the Unsafe Structures Board and related organizations; provides technical advice and makes recommendations relating to permitting and building construction.
  • Visits job sites to address code compliance issues, stop work orders, fire damage assessments, or verify project completion for Certificate of Occupancy issuance
  • Occasionally oversees building inspectors site visits.
  • Performs the duties of the Building Official in their absence.
  • Electronically prepares reports, presentations and written communication using provided hardware and software systems and equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of applicable city, state, and federal building codes, ordinances, rules, and regulations
  • Advanced knowledge of methods and practices involved in constructing and installing a variety of building systems
  • Knowledge of defects and faults in building construction, installations, and effective corrective measures
  • Advanced knowledge of acceptable health, safety, and fire standards in building construction
  • Advanced ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel) and applicable organizational software
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule
  • Ability to delegate, manage, and supervise effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Supervision

  • Reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures and meets with management staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Assesses and monitors workload, identifies opportunities for improvement and implements changes.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Engineering, Architecture; supplemented by seven (7) to ten (10) years progressively experience as an electrical contractor, general contractor, mechanical contractor, or plumbing contractor with five years’ construction experience in High Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ), including at least three (3) years of supervisory or management experience; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience. Must be certified by the State of Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB) as a Building Code Administrator. Required certifications must be kept current. Must possess or be able to obtain certification as a Building Official by BORA within ninety (90) days of hire.

Must have National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification (level to be determined by job classification requirements), or obtain within one year of employment. Must be a certified general contractor, building official, and Floodplain Manager. Must have a valid Florida driver’s license with satisfactory driving record throughout employment.
