DIRECTOR – AUTOMATION AND CONTROLS

Job Description Summary

The Director – Automation and Controls, with extensive experience in the steel industry or manufacturing environment, will lead our efforts in assessing process lines for controls upgrades and automation. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership capabilities in project development and scope definition, with the ability to assemble and manage teams to successfully implement automation projects. Additionally, this role will involve developing long-range strategies for automation throughout the organization.

Primary Responsibilities For The Director – Automation And Controls

  • Assessing Process Lines: Evaluate existing process lines within the steel manufacturing facility to identify areas for controls upgrades and automation improvements. Conduct thorough analysis to determine the feasibility and potential benefits of automation implementation.
  • Automation and Controls Upgrades: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop strategies for implementing automation and control upgrades. Oversee the design, testing, and integration of new systems to optimize performance, increase productivity, and reduce costs.
  • Project Development: Lead the development of automation projects from concept to implementation. Define project scopes, objectives, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders. Develop detailed project plans, timelines, and budgets to ensure successful execution.
  • Team Management: Build and manage cross-functional teams to execute automation projects effectively. Provide clear direction, guidance, and support to team members throughout the project lifecycle. Foster a collaborative and results-oriented work environment.
  • Automation Implementation: Oversee the implementation of automation solutions across process lines. Coordinate with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely and successful deployment of automation technologies. Monitor project progress and address any issues or challenges as they arise.
  • Performance Monitoring and Optimization: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of automation and control upgrades.
  • Long-Range Automation Strategy: Develop and communicate a comprehensive long-range automation strategy for the organization. Identify opportunities for automation integration across different departments and functions to enhance operational efficiency and productivity.
  • Technical Expertise: Stay abreast of emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in automation and control systems within the steel industry. Leverage technical expertise to drive strategic decision-making and ensure the successful implementation of projects.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with key stakeholders, including senior management, engineering teams, and operations staff, to align automation initiatives with business objectives. Communicate progress, challenges, and outcomes of automation projects effectively to ensure organizational buy-in and support.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive a culture of continuous improvement in automation processes and technologies. Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in automation to identify opportunities for optimization and innovation.
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required For The Director – Automation And Controls

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in automation and control management within the steel industry or manufacturing sector.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading automation projects from concept to implementation, including project management, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams.
  • Strategic thinker with a demonstrated ability to develop and execute long-range automation strategies aligned with business goals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify opportunities for process optimization and efficiency gains.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to automation and control systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, well organized and the ability to prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
  • Willing to work in a fast paced, ever-changing work environment.
