Overview

Sr. R&D Engineer is responsible for designing, coordinating, and executing experimental lab and / or pilot plant studies to develop new or improved refining and petrochemical processes. They must collaborate with different business groups and provide technical support for process scale-up, commercial design, and business development.

Details of the Role

  • Lead technology and catalyst innovations from concept through commercialization.
  • Responsible for defining, coordinating, and executing experimental plans to develop or improve refining, petrochemical and/or water treatment processes.
    • Communicate with R&D Director, Technology Manager and Process Engineers to understand the scope of the data needs.
    • Develop project scopes and equipment lists for any required modification of R&D equipment.
    • Integrate HSE requirements into planning, design and execution of work including “Management of Change” for PSM applicable area activities.
    • Actively engage with members of the R&D team including Operations, Maintenance, and Analytical to execute lab/pilot plant operations and analyze data.
  • Knowledge of heterogeneous catalysts and preparation of heterogeneous catalyst samples with various techniques, such as incipient wetness impregnation or co-precipitation.
  • Work with 3rd party catalyst manufacturers to have them generate samples and finalize catalyst recipes. Also test 3rd party produced catalysts to ensure proper quality is achieved.
  • Communicate effectively with Technology Managers and other colleagues to convey the results and conclusions.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering or MS in Chemical Engineering with 3 to 5 years’ experience and experimental background with ability to synthesize catalyst samples is preferred.
  • Research/Industrial experience in both process modeling and lab-scale experiments preferred.
  • Experience with high throughput catalyst testing tools is a plus, such as the Flowrence system.
  • Strong background in catalysis and fundamental chemical engineering principles (thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, unit operations, reaction kinetics, fluid mechanics, process modeling, etc.) required.
  • Excellent technical, written and verbal communication skills; able to deliver technical messages effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders and team members.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deliver on their objectives.
