Position Summary

The Director of Physical Security oversees and manages the physical security operations of SGMC Health. This role includes developing and implementing comprehensive security strategies to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors and the protection of hospital property. The Director will lead the physical security team, coordinate with law enforcement agencies, and maintain compliance with all applicable safety and security regulations. This position reports directly to the Chief Information Officer, and the Physical Security Department is part of the Information Services Division of SGMC Health. This position requires on-call availability and the ability to respond to emergencies at any time. Occasional travel may be required for training and professional development.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Education

  • A bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or Security Management, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.

CERTIFICATIONS

  • Basic Security Officer Course
  • Certification in Hospital Safety and Security (CHPA) is considered a plus.
  • Certified Protection Professional (CPP) is considered a plus.
  • Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) is considered a plus.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification are preferred. EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in security management, with at least five years in a leadership role. Experience in healthcare security is highly desirable.
  • Formal law enforcement experience is strongly preferred.

SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Develop, implement, and maintain security policies, procedures, and protocols to safeguard hospital premises, personnel, and assets.
  • Lead, train, and supervise the physical security team, ensuring appropriate coverage and response to security incidents.
  • Conduct regular security risk assessments and audits to identify vulnerabilities and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with hospital administration, department heads, and external agencies, including local law enforcement, to enhance security measures and respond to emergencies.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems that the Information Security and Technology department manages.
  • Develop and execute emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures, active shooter protocols, and disaster response strategies.
  • Monitor and analyze security incident reports to identify trends and develop strategies for prevention and response.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local hospital security and safety regulations.
  • Provide training and education on security awareness and emergency procedures to hospital staff.
  • Manage the security budget, including staffing, equipment, and other related expenses.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a team, manage conflict, and foster a safe and secure environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of hospital staff and external agencies.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and security management software.
