The Office of the Comptroller’s Bureau of Information Systems provides a full range of technology support services for key business functions and Charter mandated responsibilities of the Comptroller’s Office. These services include technology strategic planning, web site development, graphic design, disaster recovery, systems development, network administration, audio/visual services, business process re-engineering, change management, program management, security administration, service desk, computer operations, telecommunications, and document management.

The prospective candidate must be capable of exercising independent judgment and maintaining confidentiality related to matters requiring handling of sensitive information.

Role

This is a part-time role for current college students only. The selected candidate may work up to 17 1/2 hours per week. Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Collaborate with lead analysts, software developers, project managers, quality assurance testers, subject matter experts, and end-users to document software requirements following organization’s established standards and practices.
  • Assist Executive Director of System Architecture to interview the varied stakeholders as part of a software project’s business requirements elicitation process.
  • Assist Executive Director of System Architecture with developing templates to promote consistency in written requirements format.
  • Develop diagrams and visual models to support written software requirements.
  • Assist with research of best of breed software packages based on a set of known requirements and selection criteria.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.

For Assignment Level II (Information Technology)

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.

For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow)

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE

Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.

Preferred Skills

  • Willingness to learn about the software development process. - Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. - Excellent administrative and computer skills (Microsoft Suite Products). - Excellent writing (including typing) skills with a solid command of the language. - Must be able to express complex ideas clearly, both in written form and verbally. - Must be able to summarize and present information at the level of detail the target audience needs. - Must be able to write for multiple audiences, including for customers who have to validate the requirements and for developers who need clear and precise requirements to be able to develop the implementation. - As well as being detail-oriented, must also be able to see the big picture – think broadly in terms of systems. - Must be able to think at both high and low levels of abstraction and know when to move from one to another. - Must be able to organize often disjointed information gathered during elicitation and analysis activities. - Must be comfortable talking to individuals in diverse job functions and at all levels of the organization.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
