Electrician Apprentice or Journeyman

Reports To: Director of Maintenance

Amount of Travel Required: In-District Travel

Work Schedule: 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day (hours and schedule may vary)

Position Summary

Responsibilities include but are not limited to installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures. Ensures work is in accordance with relevant codes. May install or service parking lot fixtures, electrical control systems, time clocks, scoreboards, and other electrical needs of the school district.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain current Arkansas Journeyman Electrician's License.
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
  • Repair or replace wiring, equipment, and fixtures using hand tools and power tools.
  • Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical wiring, equipment, appliances, and fixtures.
  • Test electrical systems for safety and compatibility using devices like ohmmeters and voltmeters.
  • Use various tools and equipment, including power construction equipment, testing equipment, and measuring devices.
  • Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring and fixtures based on job specifications and local codes.
  • Inspect electrical systems for hazards, defects, and the need for repair to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems and components using test equipment and tools.
  • Follow blueprints to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.
  • Install ground leads and power cables to equipment.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, and roofs to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring and equipment.
  • Maintain business records, prepare reports, and order supplies and equipment.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, such as digging trenches to lay conduit.
  • Assist during emergencies by operating floodlights and generators, placing flares, and driving vehicles.
  • Implement the NLRSD Desegregation Plan.
  • Document completion of work orders.
  • Adhere to NLRSD policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance.

Skills & Abilities

  • Education: High School Graduate or GED.
  • Experience Requirements:
  • Electrician Apprentice:
  • No prior experience is required; however, completion of relevant coursework in electrical technology through a vocational or technical school is preferred.
  • Must be willing to complete an approved apprenticeship program, which includes a combination of on-the-job training (approximately 2,000 hours per year) and classroom instruction (approximately 144 hours per year).
  • Journeyman Electrician:
  • Must have completed a recognized electrical apprenticeship program (4-5 years).
  • 4 to 10 years of related experience in the electrical field is preferred.
  • Experience with installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings is advantageous.
  • Must possess a valid state-issued Journeyman Electrician's License.
  • Computer Skills: Basic operation of hand-held personal communication instruments preferred.
  • Certificates & Licenses: Arkansas Licensed Journeyman Electrician or Master Licensed Electrician or the ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment
