The purpose of the position is to assist project managers and other technical office staff in the development of water resources projects and to provide meaningful work experience to engineering/environmental students in a job closely related to their field of study.

This is a temporary position for the summer months of 2025.

On a Given Day, You’ll

  • Works under the direct supervision of engineering staff.
  • provide field assistance during wetland delineations, sediment sampling and hydrosurveys, and on-call construction observation roles (not expected to be more than two consecutive days on a construction site).
  • Use your knowledge of plant identification, hydric soils, wetland hydrology indicators
  • Learn to independently collect field survey data using a handheld GPS.
  • Assist with report writing to document field observations, collect desktop study data.
  • Prepare technical reports required by the project scope.

Required Qualifications & Physical Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s license and good driving record required
  • Completed college level coursework in plant identification and soil classification.
  • Strong written/verbal communications skills and the ability to operate independently.
  • Regular lifting, carrying material or equipment of moderate weight (of 50 pounds or less).
  • Occasionally lift equipment of moderate weight in and out of vehicle or overhead.
  • Occasionally push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop and climb ladders.
  • Occasionally work in environments with extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Occasionally work on water within boat or while wearing waders.
  • Occasionally longer field days over 8 hours.
  • Occasionally overnight stays in a hotel.
  • Frequently walk over uneven, wet terrain and challenging fauna / flora habitats.

Desired Education and Experience

  • Currently working towards a degree in soil science, conservation, or related field.
  • Experience in soil judging.
  • Willingness to attend UW-La Crosse Wetland Training Workshop (June 2025).
  • Experience in ArcGIS and AutoCAD.
  • WDNR or NASBLA Boaters Certification.
