The Boise Public Library is seeking an experienced librarian with stellar leadership skills for a position with the Information Services team of community-serving superheroes! This role:

  • Conducts advanced-level librarian duties, including customer service, program development, outreach, community engagement, and training and direction to library users and staff members.
  • Collaborates with patrons and colleagues to facilitate access to diverse information resources.
  • May be required to work at various locations in the library system.
  • This position works under the general direction of the Library Information Services Manager.

Essential Functions

Performs all duties of lower-level librarian positions. Performs highly complex and specialized tasks.

Spearheads the development, conceptualization and execution of library programs, community events and public instruction workshops. Determines program content and oversees logistical aspects including contracting with authors, performers and vendors. Directs the advertising and promotional efforts of library programs.

Cultivates an advanced knowledge repository of library resources and methodologies, staying up to date on emerging trends and technologies that impact library services and users.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • Master’s degree in library and information science and
  • 6 years of experience working in a public library developing and implementing library programs and providing reference and reader's advisory service, or
  • an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Knowledge Of

  • public library approaches, policies and procedures;
  • theory and practice of reference services;
  • intellectual freedom and open access;
  • quality customer service techniques;
  • print, electronic and web-based library resources; and
  • proficiency with office software and ILS systems.

Ability To

  • demonstrate leadership to staff;
  • work effectively with diverse personalities and populations, using tact, good reasoning and sound judgment;
  • analyze and resolve customer issues;
  • communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and
  • perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • Master's degree in library and information science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university and
  • 9 years of experience in a public library setting developing and implementing library programs, providing reference and reader's advisory service, and establishing partnerships with other organizations and
  • some experience supervising staff.

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds and frequently pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment

The work environment will include inside conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria and chemicals.

This position works: weekends and evenings, as needed.
