Job Description

Geologist 9-P11

This position conducts administrative completeness reviews and technical reviews of hydrogeological studies and models submitted to WRD Resources program permitting staff as part of permit applications under Parts 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, and/or 303, Wetlands Protection, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended (NREPA) and other Joint Permit Application (JPA) statutes. This position documents the findings of the administrative completeness reviews and technical reviews and provides the findings to the HSFMU supervisor and permit staff. This position participates in meetings between the Resources program permit staff, other FOSS, applicants, and agents. This position updates the MiEnviro database.

Geologist 12

This position is the recognized resource for technical and policy assistance and reviews relating to hydrogeological studies and models for the WRD Resources program which includes Parts 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, and/or 303, Wetlands Protection, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended (NREPA) and other Joint Permit Application (JPA) statutes. This position conducts and documents the findings of the administrative completeness reviews and technical reviews, provides staff trainings, develops new procedures and education and outreach materials, and participates in meetings between the Resources program permit staff, other FOSS, applicants, and agents.

Position Description

Required Education And Experience

Education

Possession of a bachelor's degree in geology, geological science, hydrogeology, geophysics, or geological, petroleum, or mining engineering..

Experience

Geologist 9

No specific type or amount is required.

Geologist 10

One year of professional experience in carrying out geological activities to protect, develop and maintain natural resources equivalent to a Geologist 9.

Geologist P11

Two years of professional experience in carrying out geological activities to protect, develop and maintain natural resources equivalent to a Geologist, including one year equivalent to a Geologist 10.

Geologist 12

Three years of professional experience in carrying out geological activities to protect, develop and maintain natural resources equivalent to a Geologist, including one year equivalent to Geologist P11.

Alternate Education And Experience

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in environmental geoscience, earth science, or environmental science with 15 semester (23 quarter term) credits in the following core geology classes: physical geology, sedimentology/stratigraphy, mineralogy/petrology, structural geology and field instruction; additionally, the candidate must have 21 semester (32 quarter term) credits in elective geology coursework; and two courses each in calculus, chemistry and physics. This may be substituted for the educational requirement.

The work location of this position will be Lansing, MI. However, the selected candidate may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule (combination of remote and in-person). Employees approved for schedules that include remote work must complete that work within Michigan. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed. When working remote, employees must use a designated workspace that is safe and professionally appropriate, allows for privacy, minimizes distractions, and includes secure internet access.
