Position Overview

The Administrative Fellowship Program at Sutter Health provides an outstanding opportunity for Master's prepared individuals to learn from excellent preceptors and to work in one or more areas of administrative specialization: acute care hospitals, medical groups/foundations and ambulatory care environments in an integrated, not-for-profit health care system. Administrative Fellows gain experience and develop an in-depth understanding of operations and strategic initiatives through project work and direct participation in management activities. Exposure to the various healthcare environments enables Sutter Health Fellows to gain a broad base of understanding regarding the challenges facing health care delivery systems and additionally to develop valuable skills that will better prepare them to assume leadership roles in the health care industry.

Job Description

These Principal Accountabilities, Requirements and Qualifications are not exhaustive, but are merely the most descriptive of the current job. Job Accountabilities

Manage/ complete special projects on initiatives relating to business/ strategic planning and affiliate/ organization-wide operations.

  • Representative assignments include developing and implementing new business plans and opportunities, analysis of company data, and completing projects with senior staff

Conduct research, collect and analyze data.

  • Provide leadership/ support in the areas of research, analysis, planning, project development/ implementation and communications
  • Draft communication/ responses to public officials, demonstrating an understanding of Sutter Health’s and/or its affiliates’ stance on issues
  • Increase knowledge, skill and ability in resource administration
  • Review policies, committees and processes for resource administration
  • Participate in organization budget development and execution

Attend and actively participate in and/or lead senior leadership meetings/ committees at the affiliate, system and/ or community level.

  • Attend local meetings of hospital councils, healthcare planning agencies and other healthcare groups
  • Attend and actively participate in public/ community/ other selected meetings where organization staff interact with service organizations
  • Participate in committees and task groups, fill acting roles and complete projects

Rotate through various lines of business/ departments/ service lines to gain an in-depth understanding of Sutter Health and healthcare operations in the not-for-profit environment.

  • Develop a solid working knowledge of the multiple care environments and issues associated with each, including access, cost/ pricing, financing, etc
  • Gain awareness of the government and accrediting agencies applicable to different care environments
  • Volunteer for developmental projects and studies
  • Complete extended rotations in services or programs of special interest

Education

Master's: Must be currently enrolled in an MHA/ MPH Degree Program to qualify as a Resident. Must be a recent MHA/ MPH graduate or enrolled in a Post Graduate Degree Program in Healthcare Administration or Pubic Health to qualify as a Fellow.

Typical Experience

1 year recent relevant experience.

Skills And Knowledge

Knowledge of current issues affecting the healthcare industry desired, as is awareness of applicable legal and accreditation requirements, standards and guidelines. Knowledge of Lean/ Six Sigma approaches to process improvement helpful.

Must have the leadership, communication (written, verbal and presentation), problem identification and analytical skills required to formulate and recommend creative solutions to diverse and complex problems.

Also required is skill in the use of a computer, including use of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.

Must function effectively as both a team member and leader.

Must be able to read and understand financial analyses/ statements.

Organization And Prioritization Are Skills Required.

Must be able to work effectively in an independent fashion - - without significant direct supervision, guidance or direction.

Assignments are of considerable complexity, depth, and variety, which require the application of independent judgment and exercise of initiative.

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
