The Educator/Trainer of Inpatient coding will be a Subject Matter expert in Acute Inpatient Coding that effectively develops and delivers standardized inpatient coding education under the IP Coding Academy for Middle Revenue Cycle Coding Services Operational Team with a focus on ICD-10-CM/PCS classification, Official Coding Guidelines for Inpatient, Coding Clinic guidance, and delivery of Baseline and Graduate Assessments. Educators deliver industry Standard Revenue Cycle inpatient training to expedite a team member to a productive state while fostering a positive learning environment. Provides training on key concepts for acute inpatient coding supporting medical coders on current regulations, coding guidelines, and payer requirements, required for career development. Provides guidance, support, and industry expertise to develop outpatient medical coders.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop, deliver, and maintain a standardized educational program for IP Coding Academy under Middle Revenue Cycle Coding Operational Team ensuring a timeline and efficient methodology while achieving Coding Operational strategic organizational objectives
  • Develops all educational materials and coding aids for training outpatient medical coders on ICD-10-CM & PCS for inpatient coding
  • Assist in the oversight, maintenance, and consultative expertise on the centralized content management Learning Community for Acute IP Coding operations OLC/TI toolset
  • Develop and provide educational programs specific to IP Coding Academy based on regulatory requirements, coding guidelines, and payer requirements in large group settings
  • Perform case selection for inpatient chart coding by trainees within IP Coding Academy in alignment with the training schedule
  • Educate medical coders on the use of stand-alone encoders
  • Provide educational support for coders through HealthStream assignments, directed study and/or instructor-led education
  • Identifies and evaluates innovative educational methodology that may be appropriate for the targeted audience; incorporates new methodology as appropriate to enhance and update the effectiveness of education and skills development programs
  • Serves as a technical resource for all involved personnel; ensures that information is accurate and current, meeting professional coding standards
  • Collaborate with resources (e.g., business leaders, instructional designers, SME’s, business leadership) to facilitate development of appropriate learning objectives and curricula
  • Ability to work on multiple items/projects at once
  • Effective in using relevant computer systems and software (LMS toolset, MS Office)
  • Possess strong written, verbal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Maintain patient, team member and employer confidentiality; comply with all HIPAA regulations

Required Qualifications

  • Professional licenses(s) and/or certification(s) of acute and/or ambulatory coding through AHIMA or AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, COC, CPC, CCS-P)
  • 5+ years of acute inpatient coding experience in large multi-specialty hospital, hospital system, or equivalent health related organization
  • 2+ years of experience in delivering coding education
  • Advanced knowledge of acute inpatient coding classifications, coding guidelines, coding conventions and payment methodologies
  • Working knowledge of regulatory developments involving agencies such as CMS, AHA, DHS and Joint Commission influencing coding practices
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications, Middle Revenue Cycle Industry Standard Technologies, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems
  • Demonstrated ability to establish positive working relationships, effectively manage competing priorities, and accurately complete highly detailed work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in team environment and/or developing teams
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and preparation procedures
  • Proven ability to identify and interpret strategic and operational education/development needs
  • Proven ability to contribute to the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of education plans, curricula, and methodology
  • Proven ability to share knowledge in an effective way that enhances learning and application of new skills

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
