PROJECT ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST JOB SUMMARY: Conducts environmental field studies & assessments of designated ecological resources, including wetlands, forests, streams, soils, plants, and wildlife, in order to identify, evaluate, and seek permit approval for any potential impacts to these resources in and near project sites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to the following:

  • Conduct site investigations and data collection using handheld GPS equipment.
  • Analyze reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, tests, and aerial photographs on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and other topographic and geologic data to support environmental projects.
  • Process and analyze data using ESRI GIS software and tools.
  • Conduct wetland and stream delineations.
  • Complete wetland and stream delineation reports, as required.
  • Assist with stream surveys and assessments in support of stream restoration projects.
  • Lead tree surveys.
  • Apply procedures, laws, standards, and regulations pertaining to compliance with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA) and/or Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
  • Assist with meetings to present and interpret environmental impacts and related project information.
  • Monitor environmental compliance and coordinate on-site project monitoring as needed.
  • Conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessment site reconnaissance in accordance with current ASTM standard.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an environmental, biological, natural science, natural resources or related field or significant demonstrated professional related work experience. Completion of wetland delineation training consistent with United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Wetlands Delineation Manual and familiarity with field data collection methodologies, including GPS equipment, required. Experience with Clean Water Act (CWA) permitting and Environmental Species Act (ESA) consultation processes is a plus.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: As needed

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret common scientific and technical journals, business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Have excellent presentation skills. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from groups of managers, clients, vendors, governmental agencies and the general public. Ability to clearly convey to project members what is expected from all in order to complete a successful project.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as monetary budgets, cost estimates, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to work with statistical and analytical concepts.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of given variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form and convey interpretations to clients, team members, managers, governmental agencies and the general public. Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with clients and fellow project personnel.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a solid foundation in computer applications. A solid foundation of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Internet software is required. Basic competency in ArcGIS software is required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel up to 50% of the time. Infrequent overnight travel will be required.
