Performs general duties in the prevention of fire and protection of life and property. Work is performed as a member of a team and a superior officer is usually available to assign definite duties.
Illustrative Examples of Work
Responds to fire alarms with a fire company. Prepares to fight fire by connecting hose to hydrants or pumps and joining hose sections and nozzles to hose. Enters burning building and operates nozzle to direct stream of water on fires. Operates equipment to facilitate entry into locked buildings through approved forcible entry methods. Operates hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment in extinguishing fires. Operates pumps to maintain an adequate water volume and pressure. Raises, lowers and climbs ladders. Ventilates burning buildings to carry off smoke and gases. Rescues individuals and provides appropriate emergency medical assistance. Performs property conservation operations such as placing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris. May drive ladder trucks, pumper trucks and emergency trucks in responding to fire alarms and in returning to the station. Attends instruction sessions concerning firefighting methods, equipment operation, first aid, and street hydrant locations, and maintains good physical fitness. Administers first response first aid to injured or afflicted persons. Performs other related work as assigned.

By Closing Date Of The Announcement, Applicants Must
- Be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien with the right to work in the United States.
- Have a high school diploma or valid equivalency certificate. Bachelor's degree, or an associate degree in a Fire Science or an EMS curriculum preferred.
- Hold a current State of Michigan Paramedic License, or National Registry EMT - Paramedic license, or provide documentation that the applicant is within six months of graduation from a Paramedic/ACLS curriculum.
- Possess a Conference of Western Wayne or EMPCO Firefighter written test score.
- Possess (or be in the process of obtaining) the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) or equivalent agility test, which must have been issued in the 12 months prior to the date of application.
- Possess normal visual functions and acuity in each eye, correctable to 20/20 with eyeglasses.
- Be free from any physical defects, chronic diseases, organic or functional conditions or mental and emotional instabilities which may tend to impair the efficient performance of duties or which might endanger the lives of others or the individual employee.
- Possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's or a basic commercial driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
- AT THE TIME OF CERTIFICATION TO THE DEPARTMENT FOR FINAL INTERVIEW AND HIRING CONSIDERATION, CANDIDATES MUST POSSESS:
- A current State of Michigan Paramedic License or National Registry EMT - Paramedic license; or, be within 90 days of completing a recognized paramedic program. The candidate must successfully pass the National Registry Exam and possess a State of Michigan Paramedic License within 90 days of hire date. The candidate's one-year probationary period will begin once the State of Michigan Paramedic License has been obtained and all minimum qualifications have been met.
- A State of Michigan Firefighter II Certificate or equivalent certification in a state that has reciprocity; or, be within 90 days of completing a recognized Fire Program or Fire Academy that will result in Firefighter I & II certification. The candidate must possess Firefighter I & II certification by date of hire.
- Be Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified or obtain ACLS certification within 90 days of hire date.
- The CPAT or equivalent requirement may be waived, at the discretion of the Fire Chief, if the applicant has previously passed the CPAT or equivalent test, and was employed as a certified Firefighter within the past three years.

- Candidates must submit documentation of their CWW or EMPCO Firefighter written test results upon application. Firefighters with a minimum of one year of work experience (2912 hours) will be given the option of submitting a written fire test score from CWW or EMPCO; or, be assigned the minimum written passing score of 70% for purposes of exam calculation. The 15 candidates with the highest passing scores on the CWW or EMPCO Firefighter written test will be invited to continue to the interview portion of the examination process. Remaining candidates who pass the written test will have their names kept on file for future reference during the life of the eligible list.
