Your expertise will be instrumental in analyzing, designing, launching, and resolving challenges related to mechanical systems across various technical sectors. The primary emphasis will be on integrating advanced systems into low- and zero-emission heavy-duty transit coaches, specifically focusing on battery electric and hybrid technologies. This is a hands-on position that will report directly to the Mechanical Engineering Manager of New Product Engineering.

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Livermore, CA. In this pivotal role, you will be tasked with the design and industrialization of innovative content for GILLIG's dynamic product line. Your expertise will be instrumental in analyzing, designing, launching, and resolving challenges related to mechanical systems across various technical sectors. The primary emphasis will be on integrating advanced systems into low- and zero-emission heavy-duty transit coaches, specifically focusing on battery electric and hybrid technologies. This is a hands-on position that will report directly to the Mechanical Engineering Manager of New Product Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Transform customer, program, regulatory, manufacturability, quality, and other requirements into actionable design concepts.
- Collect and analyze information from supplier components, existing designs, and technological advancements to refine and optimize design strategies.
- Perform design trade-offs and optimizations to create robust, manufacturable, and maintainable designs.
- Utilize 3D CAD tools to create, review, and release vehicle components and assemblies.
- Engage in the creation, review, and release of component and assembly drawings using 2D drafting tools.
- Employ analytical methods to evaluate designs, addressing factors such as stress, vibration, thermal performance, and durability.
- Manage design releases and oversee the creation of Bills of Material.
- Provide ongoing support for designs throughout the manufacturing launch and field introduction phases.
- Contribute technical insights to publications and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical and controls engineers.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD tools for vehicle component and assembly design.
- Comprehensive understanding of mechanical systems design, particularly within the automotive sector.
- Familiarity with electric and hybrid powertrain technologies.
- Strong analytical abilities for design evaluation and optimization.
- Demonstrated capacity for collaboration across multiple engineering disciplines.
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience, particularly in automotive or heavy-duty vehicle design.
- Proven ability to convert high-level program requirements into tangible design outputs.
- Experience working with suppliers and participating in hands-on troubleshooting and validation activities.
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Service (DFS), and cost-efficiency practices (Value Engineering).
