This position will provide technical leadership across all engineering teams in the Defense organization. The Director of Defense Engineering will establish objectives and long-range goals for engineering that are consistent with a defense business. Will lead in technology transfer and collaboration between the Defense group and other parts of the Engineering business unit and Roush. This role will provide technical leadership to guide teams through engineering development, maintain team capabilities and competencies, and engage with customers on multiple design-led programs. The Director of Defense Engineering will be a strong leader who understands the business and can manage multiple clients and locations in a dynamic environment while ensuring the engineering department is appropriately staffed and correctly trained. Provides technical consultation and council to the Vice President of Defense. This role will be located onsite in Troy, MI.

As The Director Of Defense Engineering, You Will

  • Lead a multi-discipline engineering team involving the design, development and qualification of new products, activities that support growth, and sustaining, improving, and optimizing engineering performance in support of DOD (Department of Defense) and Government programs.
  • Provide strategic direction and enterprise leadership to operationalize company and departmental plans, drive innovation, enable process improvements, and foster cross-departmental collaboration to achieve corporate goals.
  • Establish goals and standards of performance, creates budgets, staffing plans, and short and long-term strategic product and technology roadmaps / plans.
  • Provide strong technical engineering leadership and project management skills. This is a working manager role and requires leading and mentoring the team to address complex and challenging technical issues.
  • Supports day-to-day engineering activities of the organization including defining and implementing strategic technical direction and short- and long-term planning.
  • Directs the continuous improvement of the organization in terms of personnel, training, process definition/execution, and discipline.
  • Monitor, track, and report on engineering department regarding engineering efficiency, engineering discipline specific metrics, regular product and project updates.
  • Fosters teamwork across the organization and leads conflict/problem resolution within the group.
  • Engagement with customers including periodic presentations to present status of projects.

To be considered for the Director of Defense Engineering, you will need:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering or similar technical discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience leading engineers performing electrical, mechanical, software and systems engineering design in the defense industry.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing an engineering budget.
  • US citizen allowing for International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) compliance.
  • Experience in CAD/CAM/CAE and PLM supported process improvement and re-engineering in engineering and manufacturing processes.
  • Thorough knowledge of US Department of Defense technical, procurement and product development processes.
  • Experience working with military specifications (MIL-SPECs), ASTM/ASME specifications, and other engineering specifications.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and strong communication, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to make recommendations and provide guidance to effectively meet program staffing requirements while managing multiple projects.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance up to Top Secret.

A Successful Candidate May Also Have

  • Master’s degree in engineering or business.
