Assistant Director of Special Education Services

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education Services
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Assists with supervising and coordinating Special Education and coordinates Special Education classroom programs which include special classes for students who have special needs; who have specific learning disabilities; who are emotionally disabled; who have severe auditory disabilities; who are visually impaired; who have orthopedic or neuromuscular disabilities—this includes children in classes within the school district
2) Determines needs for additional or altered Special Education programs
3) Assists in the development of instructional programs compatible with overall educational needs
4) Interprets the philosophy and practices of the Special Education Services to administrators, staff, and the public at large
5) Assists with the preparation of state and local reports on Special Education programs
6) Cooperates with public and private agencies, organizations, and professional personnel in securing and providing services for students with disabilities
7) Organizes and coordinates research relating to problems in the education of students with disabilities
8) Participates in the recruitment, selection and assignment of all Special Education personnel
9) Assists in the development of Special Education summer programs
10) Participates in the planning and equipping of Special Education classrooms and schools
11) Assists with developing, coordinating and monitoring the Department’s budgets
12) Assists in the coordination and monitoring of all aspects of the transportation system used for Special Education students including maintaining communications with the ECESC, attending meetings, responding to community needs and assuring that vehicles owned by the Board are kept in safe running condition
13) Assists with supervision/evaluation of staff of the Department, as assigned by the Director
14) Initiates, develops and coordinates in-service programs for staff, administration and community
15) Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job with reasonable accommodations, if necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Valid NJDOE Instructional Certification as Teacher of the Handicapped or Teacher of Students with Disabilities
2) Valid NJDOE Administrative Certification as Principal or School Administrator
3) Master’s Degree with training in Special Education
4) Three to five years in education, part of which must have been in the teaching and supervision of programs for students with disabilitiesf
5) Demonstrated ability to perform in the areas of responsibility included in the job description
6) Required criminal history background check and eligibility to work in the United States.
7) All applicants must meet NJ Residency requirements as per “New Jersey First Act,” N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70).
8) Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties in the area of responsibility with reasonable accommodation.
9) Such alternatives to the above as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
1) Review of credentials filed with the Superintendent of Schools
2) An oral interview to determine an applicant’s personal qualifications and aptitude for the position, as required
3) The appointment of a person to the position advertised is the responsibility of the Board of Education and will be made in compliance with Board policies related to the appointment of professional staff
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT
Twelve-month work year
SALARY RANGE
