Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A baccalaureate degree.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Experience in investigatory work, social services, nursing, or in medical laboratory technician or medical laboratory assistant work will substitute for the required college training on the basis of 30 semester hours for one year of experience.
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from Disease Intervention Specialist 2 by the absence of independently conducting prevention and intervention activities for one of the communicable disease programs.
Examples of Work
Conducts interviews of persons diagnosed or suspected of having communicable diseases, such as STD, HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis, in order to elicit names and locating information of persons exposed.
Identifies, locates and persuades cases, contacts, suspects, and susceptible to report to medical facilities for examination, treatment, and follow-up. Recommends and urges physicians and other health care providers to use recommended therapy and appropriate laboratory tests for potential or confirmed cases of communicable disease.
Conducts case management assessments to ascertain further possible potential for spread of disease and initiates appropriate new action.
Makes assigned visits to private clinics, hospitals, prisons, laboratories, nursing homes, and schools to solicit their cooperation for reporting outbreaks and effecting disease control techniques.
Prepares and maintains confidential records; collects, documents, and verifies pertinent medical data from patients, physicians, and medical facilities.
Obtains blood and exudate specimens; performs limited physical examinations and clinical tests to determine the existence of infections or exposure to disease.
Motivates patients and educates the general public on behavior modification, risk reduction, and prevention of communicable disease.
