Job Description

This is a WEEKEND position, with two shifts Thursday through Sunday or Friday through Monday (THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE). This position can be housed at any DFPS building or may be eligible to telework. Also it is expected screeners rotate holidays.

SWI Screener

Statewide Intake Screeners perform advanced consultative child protective services work for Children’s Protective Investigation (CPI) and Residential Child Care Investigations (RCI). The work includes reviewing a subset of CPI P2 intakes and all PN intakes for appropriate assignment for investigations, alternative response (AR) or other appropriate actions and reviewing RCI P1 and P2 intakes to ensure correct prioritization and appropriate assignment for investigations or other appropriate action. Screeners will provide at least minimal preliminary investigation actions to identify the need for intervention or the type of intervention warranted. Screeners provide appropriate case decisions regarding intake prioritization and assignment for investigations based on agency guidelines and child safety concerns. Screeners must contact appropriate collaterals to obtain substantive information during screening to guide case assessments. Screeners also provide input and guidance to staff on case decisions as needed. Decisions are based on TFC statues, TAC codes, DFPS policy, sound judgment and quality social work practice. Screeners will consult with their immediate supervisors for guidance on marginal cases or cases requiring special consideration for handling. Screeners maintain and manage a large, fluid workload of intakes which must remain in compliance with agency time frames and guidelines for response. Screeners will provide consultation and assistance to staff regarding complex cases and issues serving as a peer consultant. Screener will also manage other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions

  • Reviews CPI and RCI Intakes to ensure consistent and appropriate application of policy and procedure and optimal service level to cover intakes assigned.
  • Reviews CPI and RCI Intakes to ensure content is sufficient to assess location, child safety, and degree of harm, and establish priorities and case handling.
  • Assesses severity of the circumstances according to department policies and procedures, reviews Intakes for determination of priority, allegation type and handling.
  • Reviews and documents all case related history in IMPACT and CLASS, reviews and documents criminal history and TIERS
  • Obtains and enters data detailed in collateral contacts concerning the alleged abuse/neglect of children.
  • Provides policy information to the public as well as other information and referral services.
  • Relays reports of abuse neglect (intakes) to appropriate CPI and RCI field staff or outside agencies.
  • Maintains accurate records of all work performed or as required by management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and required to maintain unit and program operations.
  • Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave policy.

Initial Selection Criteria

Currently employed with DFPS as an Investigator IV or higher; or have at least five years of Child Protective Investigations experience within the last eight years; a four-year college degree. Supervisor experience preferred.

Additional Information

This position can be housed at any DFPS building with the region of the unit or may be eligible to telework. Screeners are also expected to rotate holidays and work some weekends. CPI stipend is excluded for this position.
