Department Information

The Geography program within the Department of History, Political Science, Philosophy, and Geography, offers a Certificate in Geography and supports the Colorado Studies Certificate. The Geography program also contributes undergraduate general education courses in physical geography and cultural geography, as well as world regional geography.

Description Of Job

This is a nine-month position with the potential of summer teaching for additional compensation. Responsibilities include teaching 12-credit hours per semester.

The position is interdisciplinary. Primary teaching duties and responsibilities are to Geography, and secondarily to an area of social sciences or humanities for which the candidate is qualified. Secondary areas could be any discipline within the College of Humanities and Social Science, which include but are not limited to: Anthropology, Chicano Studies, History, Psychology, English, and Sociology.

Teaching assignments are based on department needs and candidate’s area of expertise. In Geography they may include courses such as Physical Geography, Cultural Geography, World Regional Geography, Colorado Geography, and Applied Geospatial Technology. Other courses for which the candidate is responsible depend on qualifications in a second social science or humanities discipline.

Geography lecturers participate in ongoing professional development initiatives, conference with students, provide one-on-one feedback to students, attend program meetings, mandatory training, and other related events, as necessary.

The successful candidate will have a desire to teach and mentor a diverse group of students, many of whom have been historically underserved. The person in this position should have a strong sense of collegiality and a willingness to participate in a unified and energetic department.

Primary Duties

  • Teaches a 4/4 load (1) within the Geography program primarily, and (2) within the candidate’s supplementary area of expertise secondarily. Exact distribution between programs is determined by memorandum of understanding between program heads. Teaching expectations for titled faculty are outlined in ourfaculty handbook (2.8.5). They include:
    • command of one’s subject;
    • ability to organize subject matter and to present it clearly, logically, and imaginatively;
    • knowledge of current developments in one’s discipline;
    • ability to relate subject matter to other areas of knowledge;
    • ability to provoke and broaden student interest in the subject matter;
    • ability to utilize effective teaching methods, strategies and appropriate technologies.
    • Contributes to student success through support and mentoring, including meeting for regular, posted office hours, conferencing with students, and providing one-on-one feedback.

    Ancillary Duties

    • Participates in ongoing professional development initiatives, attends program meetings, mandatory training, and other related events, as necessary.

    Salary Range

    $50,000 to $51,000 per nine-month academic year. Additional compensation may be available for summer teaching.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

    • (1) M.A. or M.S. in a CHASS social science or humanities discipline, and (2) at least 18 earned graduate credit hours in a secondary CHASS social science or humanities discipline. One of the two minimum educational qualifications must be in Geography.
    • Demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, inclusion and equity among peers and students
    • Minimum of two years of university level teaching experience
Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework related to teaching geography and a second social science or humanities discipline at the college level
  • Experience teaching geography courses
  • Experience teaching courses in a second social science or humanities discipline
  • Experience designing and teaching in-person, online, and synchronous classes
  • Experience using Blackboard
  • Experience mentoring students
