Urban Agriculture Intern
Interns must receive credit from their educational institution for their participation in the Urban Ag Internship.

Position Description:
City Green’s Urban Agriculture Internship Program will provide participants with a wide variety of hands-on work, educational experiences and independently-led projects to support City Green’s mission of creating and supporting urban farms, community gardens, school gardens and green spaces while addressing public health concerns, nutrition inequality and environmental stewardship.
The goal of the Urban Agriculture (UA) Internship is to provide a dynamic opportunity to aspiring people of varied educational fields who believe that the urban agriculture and community food systems can create environmental justice, food security, and enhance communal outdoor experiences for residents of Northern New Jersey. We are a mission-driven team and the UA Intern’s role and responsibilities will be integrated within our existing programmatic structure to implement engaging and educational programs and deepen our reach into the community.
Projects and Initiatives
Due to the seasonal nature of our work and programs, UA Intern projects, assignments and activities will be based on the season of the semester you are with us. This is a general list of what UA Interns can expect as part of their job responsibilities. An intern will perform some, not all of the following activities and tasks:
Community Engagement and Outreach
- Conduct outreach to promote City Green’s Employment, Volunteer, Internship opportunities
- Help plan and host events such as Earth Day Festival, Farm Fest, Harvest Festival, and others
- Table and conduct outreach at local health fairs, green fairs, college career fairs, etc.
- Develop outreach presentations, flyers, display boards
- Attend coalition meetings and distribute any relevant information
- Create videos for social media, create story campaigns, and social media posts.
- Help raise awareness and community engagement about City Green’s other initiatives and programs.
- Post flyers seasonally in the local towns
- Operate a weekly outreach table at the farm stand that includes taste-testing and other activities
- Help to implement the Paterson Farm Stand Outreach project plan to raise community awareness for this specific farm stand
- Participate in Garden Education for program participants of all ages and abilities with City Green staff, both at the farm and in the community.
- Help to organize donations for our farm-to-pantry program that delivers unsold produce to local food pantries and food assistance organizations
Community Garden Education
- Work as a Garden Educator with participants of all ages, following City Green’s garden curriculum
- Work with City Green staff to help construct raised bed gardens
- Serve as an educator at field trips to our urban farms in Paterson and Clifton, providing youth with direct, hands-on experience with farms, food sources, and nature.
- Serve as an educator “Eat Better Tonight” workshop and taste-tests at social service agencies, food assistance organizations and community centers
- Serve as an educator with City Green staff at horticultural therapy workshops for senior citizens and high school students with disabilities
Other Responsibilities:
- Maintain positive relationships with community partners and individuals
- Maintenance of program attendance records and monthly data updates
- Help to prepare supplies and put away supplies before and after lessons and workshops
- Participate in “All Hands On Deck” activities, where all City Green staff cooperate on a large project, event, educational program or large volunteer day
- Be prepared to represent City Green in a variety of situations with partners, guests, funders, government officials, other stakeholders, and community members
- Adhere to City Green’s principles
- Adhering to City Green’s policies and practices around diversity, equity and inclusion
- Be prepared to support interdepartmental events and activities
- Follow organizational policies and standards for safety and liability
All City Green Employees Must
- Undergo criminal background check
- Driver history check in order to operate City Green vehicles
- Be authorized to work in the US
Hours and Compensation
Interns must receive credit from their educational institution for their participation in the Urban Ag Internship.
Students will also be provided with a stipend from City Green upon completion of the internship, based upon the number of hours worked. Undergraduate Interns will be compensated at $10.00/hour. Graduate Level Interns will be compensated at $12.00/hour.
