Summary
- JOB SUMMARY
- The Medical Laboratory Assistant III is responsible for performing tasks to support pre-analytical and post-analytical functions within St. Luke’s Laboratories. The MLA will promote quality and patient safety while performing specimen collection and processing. This position will also perform lab testing following standards of accreditation agencies and state licensure requirements. The Medical Lab Assistant III performs laboratory procedures, recognizes and solves problems, carries out routine laboratory and Hospital policies and procedures. Works under the supervision of a staff Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)/Medical Technologist (MT) or MLT, performing only duties in areas that training has been completed satisfactorily as determined by the technical specialist of the area. Responsible for training new employees in the MLA department and phlebotomy department to perform all duties of their respective departments.
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education/Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in a related physical science field (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry). OR Currently enrolled and graduates from a MLS or MLT program within 8 months of hire. OR High School diploma or equivalent and graduate from Medical Laboratory Assistant Program and one (1) year of related lab experience. OR High School Diploma or equivalent and three (3) years lab, CNA or Medical Assistant experience.

- Licensure/Certification/Registration: Medical Lab Assistant (MLA) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Computerized data management systems including operation of a computerized data management system; routine billing procedures. Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to patient information. Customer service skills such as ability to effectively greet the public; work well with patients and Hospital employees; communicate effectively with all kinds of people. Ability to accurately maintain sample and report identity using patient name and identification number through sample receipt, processing and reporting. Ability to follow directions and perform tasks outlined in procedure. Ability to exercise judgment and take responsibility to maintain patient health and safety during specimen collection. Ability to organize work and meet deadlines. Ability to follow through internet search of tests. Requires depth of knowledge in the area of laboratory medicine. Understands hazardous materials encountered and treats in appropriate manner.
- READING - Intermediate: Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- WRITING - Basic: Ability to write simple correspondence.
- SPEAKING - Basic: Ability to speak simple sentences.
- MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Basic Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
- REASONING ABILITY - Intermediate Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES - Skilled at assessment and knowledgeable of growth and development. Provides appropriate care respective to the ages of the patients served per clinical environment.

- Typical Noise Level - Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic), Regularly exposed to risk of blood borne diseases. Exposed to reagents used in laboratory testing; may be exposed to/occasionally exposed to unpleasant patient elements. Exposed to hazards from electrical and mechanical equipment.
