The Southwest Connecticut Mental Health System (SWCMHS), under the umbrella of the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking a qualified individual to join our team as Medical Record Specialist 1 (PCN 144686) in Bridgeport. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Work Schedule: First Shift, Monday - Friday
  • Work Hours: Part-time, 32 hours per week
  • Work Shift: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Assisting in maintaining records on admissions and discharges and creating reports.
  • Conducting all of the releases of information for Social Security, Department of Children and Families, Department of Social Services and outside providers.
  • Preparing records that are subpoena and deliveries records to courts.
  • Conducting audits of charts to ensure medical record documentation completion.
  • Preparing reports and charts to surveying bodies such as Department of Public Health (DPH), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Joint Commission

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state medical institution or facility medical records department this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks associated with maintaining medical records and medical records coding activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Assists in maintaining a file of medical records such as daily admissions and discharges, daily census, case histories, results of diagnostic tests, signed releases of information, medical summaries and abstracts;
  • Inspects reports and records for omissions and errors;
  • Codes and files a full range of diagnoses according to anatomical systems and in conformance with accepted international classification systems (i.e. ICD, WHO, DSM3, DRG, etc.);
  • Prepares statistical reports on such matters as classification of disease, laboratory, dental, X-ray and physiotherapy activities;
  • Prepares death certificates, burial permits and other related records;
  • Prepares reports to state and federal agencies as required;
  • May attend probate court hearings and give testimony;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
  • basic medical terminology and human anatomy;
  • medical coding principles and techniques with particular emphasis on International Classification of Disease Adopted procedures;
  • principles of statistical data tabulation;
  • office systems and procedures;

  • oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications - General Experience

Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance of medical records and preparation of statistical reports.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with court subpoenas proceedings.
  • Experience with medical terminology.
  • Experience with Outlook, Excel and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience utilizing interpersonal skills in the workplace, with coworkers and clients.
  • Experience providing clear and throughout communication.

Special Requirements

Persons having responsibility for supervising or observing the behavior of inmates or custodial clients will be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification by the time of permanent appointment.
