Job Description:

  • Manages employees in the maintenance of the locomotive fleet. Ensures all Patriot Rail Company LLC safety rules and practices for Mechanical Department employees are followed explicitly.  Manage the maintenance and repairs of locomotives to ensure they meet FRA Standards and in such a manner as to reduce life cycle cost and increase their reliability and availability.
  • Maintains employee safety records regarding scheduled safety rule presentations, job briefings, and safety films. Prepares schedules for the aforementioned events.
  • Assists in the work process to maintain locomotive periodic maintenance schedule and ensure locomotives arrive to the shop on schedule.
  • Assists in the maintenance of locomotive files to comply with FRA periodic inspections rules and Patriot Rail Company LLC rules for record retention.
  • Carries out the decisions concerning correct repairs and maintenance practices of locomotives
  • Must be knowledgeable in the handling of hazardous and non-hazardous waste products
  • Performs daily service of locomotive units:  fuels, waters, lubricates and oils; wipes down and cleans unit/windows; checks supplies and drinking water.
  • Assists in periodic and annual inspections and understands FRA regulations pertaining to inspections.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license; CDL preferred.



Required Experience

  • Education Required or Equivalent Experience: Associate’s Degree
  • Education Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Related Experience Required: 5 years experience and must be fully conversant with all aspects of the maintenance and repair of locomotive’s mechanical and electrical systems



Employment Conditions

  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries.
  • Wear protective equipment including hearing protection, safety steel-toe boots, or safety glasses.
  • Work hours include a nonstandard workweek, including being on-call 7 days a week, 24 hours per day, with extended periods of time away from home and short rest between assignments in accordance with the hours of service regulation.
  • 25% Travel Required
  • Must pass all required assessments.
  • Must pass a background screening.



Physical Requirements

  • Medium to heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 80+ pounds occasionally. 
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/crawl/balance/climb.
  • Work in cramped, confined, enclosed, or awkward places.
  • Walk long distances over uneven terrain.

Environmental Conditions

  •   Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.



Safety Commitment:  

This is a safety sensitive position. The candidate selected for this position must successfully complete a full physical including a drug test. Passing results must be received prior to start date in the position.
