Pay: Starting range is between $98,883 – $128,548 per year.
The listed hiring range for this position depicts the target range of pay rates for candidates. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. Compensation for internal candidates may increase beyond the listed range based on performance over time. For all candidates, the actual starting pay rate is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to your years of related education and experience, internal pay equity, and position location.

Leadership & Strategic Initiatives
- Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans, as well as carry out plans and organization policies and procedures. Work with direct reports and other stakeholders to plan, manage, organize, implement, and evaluate programs, services, activities and procedures on an ongoing basis.
- Responsible for maintaining the physical condition of and other important factors influencing/affecting the El Cajon Campus (ECC).
- Support and inform the VP, Animal Welfare of successes, challenges and effectiveness related to animal welfare operations. Strive to increase revenue and adoption numbers in a manner consistent with SDHS values and culture.
- Create and identify new program ideas and opportunities for the campuses that will promote staff, visitor and volunteer experience as well as improve the quality of life for animals in our care.
- Maintain oversight of ECC management and reporting of animal-related statistics. Work collaboratively with the SDHS Business Intelligence Unit on collection of statistics related to animal inventory, adoptions and other program statistics.
- Champion promotion and publication of campus activities and develop and maintain good working relationships with other animal welfare organizations (e.g. San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition members), Rescue Partners, local municipal government officials and community groups and organizations.
- Determine campus and program needs and then work with the Volunteer Engagement department and other staff members to promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas.
- Collaborate with Veterinary Medicine, Behavior & Training, Humane Law Enforcement and Project Wildlife teams to deliver successful and consistent processes.
- Ensure all team members are well informed and able to articulate SDHS’ Culture of Care and Strategic Goals. Bring unity and cohesiveness to teams and ensure the implementation of training programs for all areas of responsibility in accordance with SDHS policies and procedures.
- Motivate and lead a high-performance management team; attract, recruit, develop and retain management team members.
- Ensure provision of the highest quality care and husbandry of animals in our care in accordance with our policies and procedures, current and best animal welfare practices, and provision of exceptional services to the public and community we serve.
- Oversee humane euthanasia and after care programs at the campus according to AVMA guidelines and SDHS policies and procedures. Serve as a signatory for the humane euthanasia process.
- Requires a bachelor’s degree in related field with a minimum of five (5) years professional experience in animal welfare, OR any equivalent combination of related experience and education.
- Three (3) years of supervisory experience required.
- Experience and skills in delivering presentations and public speaking required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.
