8.0 hours per day, 12 months per year Fair Labor Standard Act Status: Non-exempt
Bilingual Required - English/Spanish Language
All applicants must take and pass a written and oral assessment. Successful applicants will receive an additional .77 cents per hour, which is included in the stated pay rate.

Salary range: New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range. However, employees who have verified prior years of service in a similar occupational status from other Washington School Districts or Education School Districts, may receive experience credit towards salary placement. Salary schedules can be accessed here.
Benefits: Employees who are anticipated to work at least 630 hours may be eligible for health, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, life, and disability insurance benefits. Detailed information, including further eligibility criteria, can be found here.
Retirement: Employees may be eligible for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Eligibility is based on FTE. Detailed information can be found here.
Time Off: Vancouver Public Schools offers paid holidays and paid time off, including but not limited to, sick, vacation, personal, and bereavement leave. Additional negotiated leave options can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for this position SEIU CBA.

Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years experience as a custodial assistant or swing shift custodian. Strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment
- Good mechanical aptitude, with the ability to learn to maintain the specific HVAC and other systems of the assigned school
- Demonstrated leadership ability
- Current WISHA approved first aid certification
- Current ISSAS (International Sanitary Supply Association Standards) district training and certification
- Must take and pass a written and oral assessment
- Ability to work effectively as a team leader and team member
- Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate the work of custodial employees
- Ability to obtain Building Operator Certification (BOC) within one year of promotion
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions
- Ability to meet tight time constraints and deadlines
- Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements, goals, and outcomes
- Ability to clean to meet acceptable health and other environmental standards
- Ability to attain and maintain certifications/licenses necessary to perform work using ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts and district vehicles
- Ability to spend most of the work-day standing, lifting, and walking
- Ability to lift up to1/3 of your body weight up to 60 pounds
- Ability to climb ladders to change light bulbs and do other tasks
- Ability to communicate with a variety of people, in person, electronically, in writing, and over the phone and/or radio
- Ability to see well enough to inspect cleanliness of work areas
- Ability to speak and translate in English and Spanish required, and prior experience working with multilingual and multicultural populations preferred
- Schedule work of swing shift custodial assistants; instruct and/or train them in their duties, including security of building. Inspect their work, suggest corrective action, and participate in performance evaluations. Verify time sheets and reports, keeping records as required. Train and oversee the work of work/study and summer work students
- Operate HVAC system of assigned school; change belts, lubricate, or make adjustments as needed; write work orders for maintenance as necessary
- In the course of work, inspect building, grounds, and equipment for safety and for repairs needed. Make temporary minor repairs; write work orders for further repair. Make minor repairs to furniture and equipment
- Advise building principal on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance
- Inventory and order cleaning supplies. Anticipate future needs so that necessary supplies are always available
- Perform cleaning tasks according to division of work
- Deliver heavy items by hand truck for teachers and other staff
- Take preventative measures to protect building and equipment from freezing weather; clean snow and ice from walks and roof when necessary
- Assist in the performance and discipline process as needed and as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor and/or Director of Facility Maintenance and Operations and the Executive Director of Human Resources
- Provide direction, feedback, and guidance that will enable crews to perform their job requirements as directed by both the building administrators and the Director of Facility Maintenance and Operations
- Treat co-workers, supervisor, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times
- Serve as a positive role model for students, and practices the behaviors that are expected of our students
- Work in a flexible and cooperative manner
- Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
