Job Summary
The Division of Workforce Partnerships is looking for part-time instructors to teach its proprietary Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) workforce training program. While the program is scheduled to launch in January 2025, some preparatory work will be required in late 2024. The instructor will work side-by-side with clinical and non-clinical instructors and college faculty, employer partners, and program leadership to ensure that the training program has successful outcomes and that students receive a high-quality education that prepares them for the reality of working in a busy hospital sterile processing department (SPD). Reporting to the Division of Workforce Partnerships and under the direction of the Director of Industry Partnerships, the Instructor is primarily responsible for instructing and supervising SPT students in the classroom and laboratory and overseeing the clinical component of the program. Instruction is provided both in-person and online. This role is in response to employer demand and may include day, evening and/or weekend hours. Part-time instructors will be responsible for communicating what shifts they are available to work and ensure that they are able to attend all classes that they agree to instruct.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive and student-centered environment, with students of various learning styles, cultures, identities, and life-experiences.
- Have a strong grasp of classroom management methodologies, conduct themselves professionally in a classroom setting and fairly apply college policies regarding student performance and conduct.
- Communicate curriculum utilizing a variety of teaching methods so that learning objectives are met, skills are developed, and students are motivated to learn and achieve their educational and employment objectives. Skillfully align theory with hands-on practical hospital experience.
- Deliver lesson plans as written and provide supplemental material to achieve course objectives and address individual student needs.
- Integrate technology and active learning strategies to enhance instruction.
- Keep detailed and organized records of students’ attendance, assessments, and progress, including a final evaluation.
- Collaborate seamlessly with the CCRI program coordinator, employer partner stakeholders, and other instructors and attend meetings as needed. Participate in meetings with CCRI staff and faculty and employer partners biweekly to coordinate lesson plans, teaching schedule, discuss progress of individual students, and ensure certification compliance.
- Maintain student advising and office hours.
- Maintain all lab equipment and communicate equipment and supplies needs to program team. Ensure lab environments remain clean and sanitary.
- Evaluate student performance using varied assessment tools consistent with certification requirements.
- Participate in recruiting and scheduling guest speakers and scheduling educational field trips for SPT students.
- Participate in performing skill demonstrations and assessing return demonstrations from each student; record skill assessment materials for each student.
- Assist with administering and grading practical exams.
- Participate in meetings with each student to discuss performance in the practicum hospital experience.
- Review weekly student self-evaluations and skill assessments for each student to identify when additional instructional support may be needed.
- Participate in the planning and scheduling of each student to observe in the Operating Room.
- Train adjunct instructors in program procedures and sterile processing instructional methods to ensure consistency of training to all students.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience as a Sterile Processing Technician.
- Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST)
- Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS)
- Certified Endoscope Preprocessor (CER)
- Has held a leadership role in a SPD within the past 5 years, OR is a Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL)
- A minimum of one (1) year teaching or peer training experience.
- Intermediate digital communication technology skills (presentation tools, online meetings, etc.)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficient in the use of technology, including Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, primarily), email, the internet for instruction and program purposes, and willingness to experiment with and learn new technologies.
- Creativity and flexibility in the classroom are expected, and following the approved curriculum is essential.
