Curation Scientist

Under the general supervision of the Department Manager Laboratory Directors and Pathologists and in accordance with established policies and procedures the Curation Scientist performs independently in the Department of Pathology. The Curation Scientist will be responsible for analyzing clinical Next Generation Sequencing data evaluating variants and assessing variant pathogenicity.
Responsibilities:
- Review and interpret clinical genomic test results. Evaluate variants to curate variant nomenclature assess variant pathogenicity using internal and external databases as well as published literature following standard guidelines (ACMG/AMP).
- Provide clinical interpretation for patient report under direction of clinical laboratory directors and molecular pathologists.
- Monitor perform and document all quality control issues. Identify issues/factors that adversely affect test performance.
- Participates in NGS proficiency testing. Maintain compliance with proficiency testing policies.
- Communicate frequently with the laboratory directors pathologists bioinformatics director and manager regarding variant classifications and clinical report.
- Participate in ongoing process improvement of variant assessment interpretation and reporting. Maintain internal database for interpretation and reporting.
- Participate in new assay development and validation.
- Coordinates new employee rotating fellows and residents training to interpret clinical NGS data.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Other information:
EDUCATION:
Master’s Degree in genetics genomics molecular biology required. PhD is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Candidate must have a background in molecular genetics molecular pathology or related field with curation experience. They should have a good understanding of next generation sequencing (NGS) technology. Previous experience in genetic variant interpretation for tumor(somatic) NGS tests and/or reviewing medical publication and pathology reports. Previous experience in a diagnostic laboratory or working in clinical environment. They should have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Provides functional guidance to others who may be assigned on a project basis.
