JOB SUMMARY: The Rental Technician is responsible for preparing the rental fleet according to Western States’ client care standards in order to meet or exceed the client’s needs. Responsibilities include checking construction and support equipment in and out of inventory, loading and unloading rental fleet, moving and organizing equipment throughout the yard, and maintaining rental fleet to ensure optimum availability.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Safety
- Actively cares for, promotes, manages, and advocates safety. Ensures a safe work environment while adhering to safety policies, procedures, and standards.
- Completes Job Hazard Analysis (JHA’s) prior to job tasks according to WSECO’s policy and standards.
- Maintains clean and clutter-free work areas for safety.
- Uses required personal protective equipment (PPE) as per policy.
While under the direction of a Master or Journeyman Level Rental Technician, this position is a development opportunity for entry level candidates with mechanical aptitude or previous technician experience. Duties require basic understanding, developing as the technician advances through the Western States Equipment Technician Career Development Plan (TCDP).
Diagnosis, Maintenance, and Repair
- Identifies operational issues using provided checklists.
- Performs basic preventive maintenance and lubrication on mobile and Allied Equipment.
- Conducts machine condition inspections and general fleet maintenance.
- Performs minor machine repairs as needed.
Engines, Undercarriage, and Powertrain
- Identifies engine components and operation.
- Understands undercarriage component operation and identifies issues.
- Has basic understanding of mobile equipment and powertrain components.
Electrical and Hydraulic
- Identifies electrical system components and operation.
- Has basic understanding of hydraulic components and operation.
Fleet and Yard Maintenance
- Checks equipment in and out of inventory.
- Loads, unloads, and secures rental fleet according to load securement standards.
- Delivers equipment with appropriate trailer size/capacity as needed.
- Washes, details, and maintains rental fleet while optimizing yard organization.
- Performs other duties as assigned, developing a mindset for technician productivity.
Continued Development
- Participates in continued education and training initiatives as outlined in the TCDP.
- Utilizes service manuals and parts books to address technical issues and perform tasks within technician level abilities.
- Develops skills to address inquiries promptly and friendly to meet client expectations.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Basic computer/typing skills and ability to learn Microsoft products.
- Experience with basic hand tools.
- Ability to obtain job-related certifications for specialty equipment.
- Developing knowledge of Service Information Systems and division specific applications.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
- Consistent attendance with ability to work overtime and travel as needed.
- Promoting Western States’ purpose, vision, and values.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Proof of high school diploma or GED required.
- One-year practical industry experience preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
- Ability to obtain a DOT Medical Card and CDL preferred.
- Appropriate technician level tooling required.
- Must communicate (speak, read, write in English).
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, reach, bend, stoop, push, pull, lean, and twist.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures and environment.
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. as per Western States’ Lifting Policy.
- Must meet all safety requirements for applicable safety policies.
