Job Summary: A certified healthcare provider employed by Erlanger Health is responsible for direct and/or indirect care of patients under the direction of an RN, LPN, physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. The medical assistant assists in the delivery of healthcare for patients per their scope of practice in the ambulatory areas of Erlanger.
This position is involved in a team-based approach to care. Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State guidelines and are trained and assigned to manage the practices' patient population. Participates in the practice's quality improvement process and performance evaluation.
Education:
Required: High School diploma/equivalent
Preferred:
Experience:
Required: Completion of an accredited or governed program OR military equivalent training OR one year of clinical medical assistant experience within the last 5 years.
Preferred: Previous MA experience, Phlebotomy skills
Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration
Required: BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and to be maintained going forward.
Preferred:
- For Medical Assistants who work in areas with DNV Advanced Specific Disease Certification requirements:
- Ortho: 4 hours education annually
- Stroke: 1 hour education annually
- Spine: 2 hours education annually
Department Position Summary:
The employee must be able to:
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in physician practice.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
- Assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.
- Provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.
Fulfill patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include:
- Checking schedules and organizing patient flow
- Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room
- Assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, collecting patient history
- Performing screenings per provider guideline
- Assisting providers/nurses with various procedures, charting, relaying instructions to patients/families, answering calls and providing pertinent information.
Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include:
- Sending/receiving patient medical records
- Obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
- Completing forms/requisitions as needed
- Scheduling appointments
- Verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics
- Managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately
- Reviewing in basket messages
Fulfill environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include:
- Setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols
- Cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control
- Running quality controls on equipment as required and documenting/record keeping
- Maintaining logs:
- Refrigerator
- Sample log
- Quality control logs
- Ordering, sorting, stocking supplies
- Restocking exam/procedure rooms as needed
Fulfill organizational responsibilities as assigned including:
- Respecting/promoting patient rights
- Responding appropriately to emergency codes
- Sharing problems relating to patient and/or staff with immediate supervisor
Fulfill medical assisting responsibilities according to State guidelines/regulations which may include:
- Aseptic technique
- Sterilization
- Instrument wrapping/autoclaving
- Vital signs
- Preparation for physical exam
- Clinical pharmacology
- Drug administration
- Prescription verification with physician order
- Minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up
- Pre/post surgical care
- Applying dressings/suture removal
- Biohazard waste disposal/monitoring
- Therapeutic modalities
- Instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, home care
- Laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines
- Quality control methods
- CLIA waived testing
- Capillary punctures/venipunctures
- Specimen handling- urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputum
- Electrocardiography
