Functions as a lead worker and assists with providing oversight of 24/7 shift operations; monitors unit workload to ensure timely response and interfaces with staff and others to resolve complex and routine transport issues. May assist unit management with staff training and performance appraisals, reviews unit records and statistics
Detailed Description
Serves as a lead worker for assigned shift; monitors workload and provides basic oversight to forensic transport technicians to ensure timely response to transport assignments. Interfaces with unit staff and other contacts to provide feedback and direction to resolve complex and routine transport issues during shift. Responds to non-routine situations that occur outside of normal business hours and summons assistance or takes other actions to safeguard department personnel and property and/or decedent remains and related evidence. Assists unit management with staff training and provides input for performance appraisals. Drives a County vehicle independently or with staff to locations throughout the County to recover decedent remains, evidence, and personal items and transports to Office of the Medical Examiner building or other designated facility following established protocols. Ensures the proper care, custody, control, and safekeeping of decedent remains and other items collected or received. Performs decedent remains acceptance and release activities following established protocols, including thorough review of related paperwork to ensure accuracy and completeness; performs data entry using specialized software. May inventory and securely store evidence/personal effects. Performs administrative and technical support duties: maintaining records, receiving vendors at dock area, maintaining morgue case inventory, retrieving specimens, transporting specimens to laboratory, and assisting with supply inventory. Cleans, organizes, and stocks County vehicle with necessary supplies. Monitors vehicle operational and mileage status; fuels vehicle and obtains needed services. Performs other duties as assigned
Job Requirements
Education, Experience and Training: Graduation from an accredited high school/GED Program. Three (3) years of work-related experience or 45 hours of college or combination of the two. Special Requirements: Ability to lead shift workers, communicate effectively and maintain professional relationships with staff. Ability to maintain accurate records and operate a personal computer. Ability to demonstrate understanding of chemical and biological safe handling procedures. Work hours vary based on the needs of the 24/7 operation. Position is deemed “Essential” for inclement weather and emergency management purposes. Must pass criminal background check and mandatory drug test prior to and during employment. Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License, with a good driving record and reliable transportation. Physical/Environmental Requirements: Primary work area is varied, based on the location of the decedent remains requiring recovery/removal and transport; locations frequently involve outdoor sites, highways, roadways, and homes and hospitals. Travel to locations within Dallas County in a department vehicle is required. Death scene attendance requires the ability to navigate locations such as secluded wooded areas, river bottoms or industrial sites in all types of weather conditions. Access to the death scene may require non-vehicular travel to reach the scene. Lifting, pulling, carrying and manipulating decedents and/or other heavy, bulky or irregular objects is also required. Secondary work area is morgue/autopsy room, with routine, potential exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards. Routine exposure to odorous specimens and chemicals and graphic visual situations. Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking; lifting, positioning, pushing, or transferring of bodies; lifting of supplies and equipment; considerable reaching stooping, and bending; manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to execute standard protocols
