Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) seeks an analytical and meticulous fact-checker to join our research team and help defend our democracy. This position is a unique opportunity to be on the front lines of the fight for a more ethical, equitable and accountable government, while working alongside smart, dedicated and kind people.
As a leading nonpartisan, nonprofit government watchdog, CREW is dedicated to defending our democratic institutions, rooting out government corruption and fighting the influence of money in politics through in-depth legal actions, reports and investigations. It’s imperative the factual claims that serve as the bases of those products are thorough, fair and accurate. We are looking for a careful researcher with a keen eye for detail and skeptical investigative instincts to specialize in ensuring the accuracy of our work.
This person will also be responsible for vetting new interns, hires, and other collaborators to spot any risks, conflict, or liability they might pose.
Responsibilities

This person will also be responsible for vetting new interns, hires, and other collaborators to spot any risks, conflict, or liability they might pose.
Responsibilities
- Fact-checkingconductive comprehensive review of CREW written content including investigations, graphics, reports and legal filings for accuracy, thoroughness and sourcing by analyzing text, recreating analyses and effectively working with project leads on areas of concern
- Background researchconduct targeted deep dives into niche research areas or potential hires and produce documents detailing findings
- Other fact-finding: exhaustively uncover and investigate corruption and democracy issues to assist with CREW projects, including reviewing and analyzing government documents, news reports, databases and other resources
- A Bachelor’s degree;
- 1+ years of work experience, including internships, preferably in nonprofit, government, campaign or comparable setting;
- Commitment to accuracy and rigorous attention to detail;
- Outstanding research and analytical skills;
- Good instincts about news sources and credibility;
- Persistence and resourcefulness in tracking down information;
- Excellent written and oral and communication skills;
- Ability to work both as part of a team and independently;
- A deep, demonstrated interest in searching through public documents and other sources to find obscure information;
- Must remain organized in a fast-paced environment, adapt to changing situations, and prioritize numerous projects and tasks;
- The position is based in Washington, D.C. but will be hybrid with employees splitting their time between working at home and working in the office.
