Mission
To rescue, rehabilitate, and release native wildlife and to provide sanctuary, individualized care, and a voice for other animals in need.
History
Established in 1977, Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) receives over 10,000 wild animals per year for rehabilitation and release, as well as providing permanent sanctuary for non-releasable indigenous wildlife, non-native wildlife, and farmed animals.
Description
The Wildlife Rehabilitation and Animal Caretaker is responsible for ensuring proper care is given to all animals at WRR according to approved protocols and standards. Responsibilities include daily feeding, enclosure cleaning and maintenance, behavioral observations, and enrichment activities for various Texas native species including opossums, songbirds, doves, deer, raccoons, skunks, waterfowl, turtles, and tortoises.
Primary Position Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties
- Complete Animal Caretaking shifts at the San Antonio location, maintaining high standards of care.
- Responsible for the health and well-being of all animals and the integrity of housing and enclosures.
- Maintain detailed notes in departmental logs and report abnormalities in animal health or behavior.
- Feed all animals according to dietary guidelines and maintain cleanliness in all enclosures.
- Medicate sick or injured animals and maintain the facility and enclosure as required.
- Conduct occasional rescues, releases, and transportation of animals, adhering to protocols.
- Complete required admission forms promptly and represent WRR professionally to the public.
- Maintain an in-depth knowledge of WRR policies and assist with training volunteers and interns.
- Monitor feed and supplies, reporting low inventory levels as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Technical: Working knowledge of animal husbandry and rehabilitation.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's degree preferred in Wildlife Biology, Zoology, or Biology.
- Experience: Minimum of two years of rehabilitation and animal care experience preferred.
- Attendance: Maintain regular and acceptable attendance levels.
- Vaccinations: Required vaccinations include Meningitis, Rabies pre-exposure, and Tetanus.
- License: Valid Driver’s License and ability to lift 50 lbs.
Compensation
$16.00/hour, plus benefits including insurance premium coverage, PTO, and paid holidays.
